Very sad to find out today that another of SRFC 'characters' is no longer with us. According to his son, Simon, he died in hospital on Tuesday following a valiant 7 year struggle with cancer. The funeral is planned for Friday 17th at St. Bede's Chapel, Teesside Crematorium. Full details will be in Monday's Gazette. Many will have memories of the Deakin Stocktonians!! |

Brian, a native of Hull whose work brought him to the Teesside area, first played for the club as a winger for the 1sts & 2nds in the late 60s early 70s before a broken leg put paid to his progress. In the mid 70s he was vice captain in the side led by Derek Oliver that won the Durham 4th team cup in 1975, and a few years later in 1979, led the 5th team (Stocktonians) who also won the same cup ( it’s actually a large shield) . By this time he had sensibly gravitated to the warmth of the front row. Brian’s work then took him out of the area but we still had sporadic contact over the intervening twenty years. When Brian retired , he returned to live in Norton again and became more involved in the club in the years immediately after the Millenium, first of all managing his beloved Stocktonians and then the Saracens XV . It was with the Saracens that he achieved his final success alongside captain Andy Cowell - winning the Tees Valley Merit League in season 2004-5 against some stiff opposition. Sadly Brian’s health took a turn for the worse at the end of that season and he was unable to continue his involvement in the club. Since then he has always been positive and somewhat phlegmatic despite what must have been a great deal of discomfort. Brian certainly was a colourful character and whole books could have been written about his exploits both on and off the rugby field but whether any publisher could have been persuaded to take a chance on them is a matter of conjecture. Who can forget his potentially Oscar winning performance as the wicked Ebenezer in the Xmas pantomime of Aladdin when he was “poisoned” by widow Txxxxy with a triple gin & orange. I still recall the anguished phone call from him when our 2nds were playing at Darlington and we forgot to tell him they had moved from McMullen Road five years earlier and Brian was in “CarpetWorld” with the Saracens shirts ten minutes before kick off wondering where the rugby pitch had gone! He will be sadly missed. Our condolences go out to Allison his wife, and his family, including his son Ashley , a former Stockton juniors player. |
