History

As the young men returned from active service after the Great War, they looked for pastimes which would allow them to forget the carnage. Hockey started up again in the form of Stockton Brunswick locally. The same names eventually played for this club between the wars and we first affiliated to Durham County in 1930 and took our present title in 1939 with games against Royal Signals, Durham Colleges, Sunderland Nomads, Bishop Auckland, Darlington, Norton, Billingham Synthonia, and West Hartlepool. The Second World War ceased play but more hockey was played in the services this time.

In 1946 Horace Gale recruited old and new members to play on Preston Cricket field. He was President in 1950 when the club moved to play at Stockton C.C. A. W. Austin became President in 1952 and Michael Corner and Ken Ions kept things going through the fifties with difficulty. In 58-59 we had 32 members and the bar was opened in the stable below the pavilion. We had only two sides and no hockey was played in January because of frozen pitches. The firsts won 9 out of 23 and the seconds 11 out of 19. Captain Ken Ions reported this as the best season ever. Sunday hockey commenced in 57-58. In 62-63 we ran a third team for the first time having an influx of players including T. G. 63-64 saw Brian Bainbridge elected as captain. The seconds won 20 out of 28 games with 100 goals scored. They had a similar record the following season. In 71-72 the fourth team was started. In 72-73 we managed to beat York 1-0. In 73-74 five players came to us from Norton a great surprise. In 76-77 the fifth was going and D. Sizer was doing sterling work at the lower levels. In 82-83 Toby Blythe was selected for England at U16. At indoor M. Newbould was selected for the North. Phil Ions and Jeff Wood played for the county. From the early 80’s Bob Hill organised the indoor and still does. We have held our own in indoor hockey. When the Northern League commenced in 90-91 we hound the opposition fierce. In 92-93 we were in Div 2 and 94-95 reached Div 1 for a season before losing players. More of Div 2 before coming down to Div 2 east. The seconds have managed to reach NE Div 1 and seen capable of staying there.
