Paignton too Strong for Stokeinteignhead
Stoke CC blown away by top young Paignton side
Out Batted, Out Fielded, Out Bowled....Again
Unfortunately Stoke CC had to suffer for another Runners-up spot after getting thrashed by 79 runs by a very strong and talented young Paignton side who just dominated from the off. Once Paignton made 129 for 4 it was always going to be an uphill task at just 6 and a half and over and once Stoke we're 6 for 3 after 4 overs it was clear that it was either going to be falling way short or get bowled out cheaply which is what happened.
Openers from the off, Noah Wright and Harry Ward set the tone. Running hard between the wickets, scoring the odd boundaries and putting the Stoke boys under pressure in the field. Mark Russell and Jamie Clinkett started off steadily, bowling in the right areas but not getting the luck as of what happened in the semi final vs Brixham. Both openers put on 65 for the first wicket when Chris Prestt removed Wright and then a great spell by Sreejith Shankar removing other opener Harry Ward as well as James Fuller and Skipper Terry Farkins for ducks (All bowled). 77 for 4, hopefully by now Stoke would be on the up and hoping to put the skid on the Paignton Innings but then came Luke Medlock who changed everything. Is Innings would include hitting two big sixes, both off Chris Prestt and a few boundaries off Paul Russell to finish with an Impressive 47 not out, backed up by Charlie Ward who finished not out 10 and Paignton ended their 20 overs on 129 for 4. In the field Stoke dropped a few chances which in the end we're costly, some very tough but catches win matches as they say and also there was the odd bad bits of fielding but also credit the batsman for putting the fielders under pressure
Paignton Innings: L.Medlock 47*, H.Ward 35, N.Wright 34. S.Shankar 3-20
Big ask for Stoke. Chasing 130 at over a run-a-ball. Innings got off to the worst possible start. Losing the hero of the semi final Paul Russell, run out for 1. Hugo Longrigg followed soon, played on to Charlie Ward. Luke Medlock the hero from the first Innings removed Mike Lang for 1 and Stoke we're 6 for 3. Little partnership between Andrew Thornton-Clarke and Sreejith Shankar but again another run out removed Sreejith and soon Chris Prestt was back in the Pavilion again with another run out. More wickets fell after that and once Andrew Thornton-Clarke was dismissed for 23 (which included one maximum) it was only a matter of time for Paignton to wrap it up and they sure did. Rory Medlock bowling Patrick Smye to give Paignton their fifth Brockman Cup, first since 2013 and after at the Trophy Presentation, rightly so, Luke Medlock was named Man of the Match. In the end a very professional performance by Paignton and they're young talented bunch of players. For Stoke, they'll have to try and do it all over again Next season. Despite the weather around, big thanks to the Torquay Ground staff, also very well officiated by Umpires Mr John Sherlock and Mr Ian Western and well scored by Mr Brian Dore and Mr Tim Treeby.
A great Competition again. Hopefully another enthralling one next year.
