An unusually sunny morning greeted us at Hartwell Lane for this warm up friendly before the Stoke Festival after the Easter break. Warrington were the opposing team and in their multi coloured strip, appeared to bring a strong looking squad and agreed to play 3 matches with us. Our U8’s were looking sharp in training before the match so this was always going to be a close encounter.

Game 1

Stoke U8’s 5 – 4 Warrington U8’s

1st half – Warrington started off strongly, with their Rugby League style re-start causing some confusion to the Stoke team. Once the boys had figured out that the ball was being popped up for the opposing player to run at them with speed straight from the off, the Stoke defence adjusted smartly to limit the threat. Warrington went 2 – 0, using their tall winger to expose the Stoke defence down the wings. A clever run from Sam brought the score to 2-1 at half time.

2nd half – the Stoke boys started the strongest in the second half, defending well to force the turnover ball and scoring 3 times in succession through Sam, Reuben and Josh S to edge them in to the lead. As Warrington started to move the ball around more, they responded with 2 well worked try’s themselves, before Sam added another to give Stoke the victory.

A stop start game with little chance for either team to get into a rhythm of play but the Stoke boys defended well when they needed to and attached with precision when they had the ball.

Game 2

Stoke U8’s 7 – 7 Warrington U8’s

1st half – a change in referee brought about more fluidity in the play, allowing both teams to get into a rhythm of play and score some try’s. The 1st half was very even with both teams getting in the 6th tag to force turnover balls, with some strong scoring from Charlie, Morgan x 2 and Josh S to make the score line 4-4 at half time.

2nd half – started the same as the 1st, with both teams attacking well. Warrington were guilty of hitting the touch line a number of times allowing Stoke to counter attack, using Morgan and Sam’s pace to score to further try’s. Cane also got the ball down on the try line from close range after some efficient attacking, before Warrington scored with the last play of the game to bring the scores level at full time.

A solid performance from both teams, that will be remembered for its Gladiators style coaching from Warrington.

Game 3

Stoke U8’s 5 – 7 Warrington U8’s

1st half – a sluggish start from Stoke allowed the opposition to score 3 try’s without response, although Owen was unlucky not to stay in touch at the try line to score and get an early point back for Stoke. Josh S and Morgan x 2 responded with try’s to bring the score to 3 – 4 at half time, with Warrington looking the less jaded at the break.

2nd half – again Warrington came out the stronger team but with superb tagging from the Stoke defence prevented an even bigger lead than what they already had. Again Warrington’s pacey winger scored to extend their lead, whilst response from Josh S and Kieran brought the scores back to a respectful 5 – 7 defeat.

An even and fair mornings rugby from both teams. A win, a draw and a defeat. Bring on the Stoke festival!
