Stoke make history with 22nd league win

by

Aston OE, who hosted Stoke for the last league match of the season, started brightly for the first ten minutes of the match but, following a missed penalty, they conceded a try from Stokes first visit to their half when Simon Price broke through following a lineout. The visitors returned to the attack from the restart and three minutes later Steve Talbot broke through the defence to release Sam Yorke for a try converted by Andy Marsh. After a further three minutes a home lineout on their 22m was disrupted by Stoke who moved the ball across the backs for Paul Ramage to score in the corner. Stoke were now in control of the match and in the twenty third minute they moved the ball to the right where Andy Marsh came into the line to create a gap for Simon Price to score close to the posts for a try converted by Andy Marsh. Ben Cornwall secured the kick off and drove forward into the home half to set up a ruck which created space for the Stoke backs to run the ball to the right for Paul Ramage to score. Aston now had their best spell of the half and play moved to the visitors half where one penalty was kicked and one missed before the half time whistle.

Half Time: ASTON O.E. 3 STOKE 29

Stoke played down the slope in the second half and an early penalty set up a lineout on the 5m line. The ball was taken left but, when the moved was held up, it was moved to the right for James Salt to break through for a try. A cross wind was proving difficult to master and a further conversion kick was missed. Jordan Grimshaw secured the ball from the restart and play was taken back to the home 22m area where a Stoke line out was developed into a backs movement which ended with a try from Steve Talbot. Despite a lead of thirty one points Stoke continued to attack and in the twenty second minute the forwards decided to join in the scoring by setting up a mall from 10m out which ended with a touchdown from Jordan Grimshaw. Encouraged by a penalty goal on the half hour Aston continued to compete with increasing intensity but following an exchange of penalties in open play Stoke had a lineout close to the home line where a further rolling maul resulted in a try for Ben Cornwall. The closing ten minutes saw a totally dominant Stoke give a handling display from forwards and backs whist running in further tries from Steve Talbot, a second for Jordan Grimshaw and a third for Simon Price with one conversion from Andy Marsh.

This final session underlined why and how the squad has achieved an undefeated league season scoring 1,119 points in addition to the 177 points gained in the Intermediate Cup run.

RESULT: ASTON O E 6 STOKE 61
