Well, Fuck em all.

Jon Hoare once asked when commentating on the 2005 Ashes when England were standing on the precipice of a 2-1 series win bringing an end to the 16 year drought over the Ozzies “Is it cowardly to pray for rain?”. Well thank god Jon didn’t play rugby.

On a night more suited to amphibians or people with the same level of common sense as Felix Baumgartner Wednesday night saw Stoneham RFC turn out in force for training.

Not even Mother Nature can deter the “Fuck ‘Em” spirit of Stoneham. Following a 40 point defecit in their last match other teams would have been ignominious in their performance but the 20+ strong squad that turned out against rivals Chineham RFC on Saturday saw only a renewed determination and drive to out-perform all others.

The rain lashed and the wind howled and the team were told by the Southampton University sports ground team that training would not be able to go ahead due to a waterlogged pitch. Not even the Astro turf would be available due to concerns over the safety of playing under the flood lights in high winds. Frankly, if we’re daft enough to go out in it why not let us.

Let’s blame the EU.

So faced with the prospect of turning themselves around and heading to the pub, Stoneham dug deep and used the Fuck Em spirit, some of which can be aimed at the Health & Safety executive, to drag their arses into the gym.

Well all I can say is someone must have really pissed Matt Southey off that day! 13 stations and 5 rounds later the squad emerge battered and bruised but safe in the knowledge that if our previous results, the EU or even Mother Nature cannot deter us then Alresford RFC have got a hell of a fight on their hands this weekend. If for no other reason than the coaches voicebox got a hell of a work out this week.

Remember Stoneham never give up, never surrender and if anybody tells you otherwise...

Fuck ‘Em.
