The festive spirit was truly in the air on 22 December 2011, when the Stratford Old Edwardians, Old Boys of King Edward VI School Stratford, took on a Stratford Exiles XV in a rugby match at Pearcecroft.
Although not the first meeting between the two sides, it was the inaugural game for the Edwardians Cup, an opportunity to bring together the Old Boys and Stratford RFC in what will be an annual fixture.
Despite both sides suffering from late withdrawals, there was sufficient numbers in both ranks to ensure that the crowd of almost 200 were entertained. The Old Boys, sporting a team of Old Boys ranging from ages 19 to 39, won the game by 31-14, with tries from Tom Mahony, Jim Withers, Joe O'Leary, Drew Pritchard and Rob Fox. Fly Half Mike Plant converting three of the scores. Stratford, sporting a team including former Mini/Junior Mike Hallam, replied with tries from Dan Hope and Jo Cook with Cook and Jon Duncan kicking a conversion a piece.
£510 was raised for the Pearcecroft Trust – a Charity that has been established to provide funds for players seriously injured while playing for Stratford RFC – through wrist band sales and a raffle. The early Christmas celebrations continued long into the night, excellently led with music from the Midlands' Premier Live Band, The Score (www.thescoreband.co.uk).
