Strathaven 5 - 2 Whitecraigs
P6 start the season with a home win
After finishing the P5 season on a high with success at the Hamilton Tournament, the now P6 were eager to continue their high win rate. A home tie against Whitecraigs on 8th September was their chance as they had demolished this team at the Hamilton tournament at P5 level.
After some summer pre-season training on the much larger P6 pitch size and some coaching on the newly-introduced scrum laws, the team hoped they were ready. The game got off to a great start with an early try from Matthew Dixon in the first minute. This was quickly followed by one from Sam Howie, assisted by a powerful run by Ewan Watson. Whitecraigs had no answer at this point and Strathaven went three ahead in the seventh minute with a Lucas Blair try, assisted by an offload from Sam Howie. Just before half-time Andrew Robertson got his first try of the season with a lengthy run down the wing, again Ewan Watson assisted. Whitecraigs managed to get on the scoreboard just into the second half with a couple of tries before Luke Kennedy defied the laws of physics with the angle of lean in his winding, side-stepping run to score just before the final whistle.
Final Score Strathaven 5 - 2 Whitecraigs
In the second game Whitecraigs had lost a P6 player to injury and fielded one of their P7 players instead. This proved to be decisive as he scored in the second minute. Andrew Robertson levelled the score in the third with a trademark weaving run before tries from Lucas Blair and Sam Howie gave Strathaven a 3 - 1 lead. Whitecraigs got one back in the tenth to be one down at the interval. In the second half Whitecraigs gave their P7 player a monopoly on attacking moves and scored three tries without reply to go 3 - 5 up. Sam Howie got one back before Andrew Robertson levelled the score a minute before the final whistle. It wasn't to be and Whitecraigs scored in the final play to win.
Final Score Strathaven 5 - 6 Whitecraigs
This was a decent performance from the boys on the larger pitch and with the introduction of scrums and 8-a-side teams. Tackling proved to be their weakness, certainly in the second match and the effectiveness of the Whitecraigs P7 player proved to be a psychological factor in the home team's play. The first game was a good start to the season although the scoreline flatters a bit; the second game was the opposite as Whitecraigs attacked more effectively and could have scored more.
Squad for the day - Andrew Robertson (Captain), Ben Allan, Duncan Campbell, Ewan Watson, Gabriel Traill, Gregor Hair, Lachlan McGee, Lucas Blair, Luke Kennedy, Matthew Dixon, Rory Mullen, Ross MacDonald, Sam Howie and Tom O'Hara.
