P6 toil against Uddingston 15-9-12
P6 travelled to Uddingston for the second fixture of the season and the first away match. A good squad turned-up on the day which is more than can be said for Uddingston, who could only field 5 players. Strathaven provided them with 3 to even up the numbers for the first game.
Expecting a tough, physical match, the boys weren't disappointed. The game struggled to get into any kind of flow or pace and went into an early half-time without any score; the Uddingston coach not realising that P6 games should be fifteen minutes each way and not ten. However the extra five minutes would probably not have changed the scoreline much. Eventually Uddingston got the crowd's interest with a try after seventeen minutes only for Andrew Robertson to level the score in the twentieth. A clearance kick within their 5m line from Uddingston(another new game play for P6) nearly cost the game as the Uddy player chased the ball down the pitch and it bounced on the half-way line straight into his hands. He continued his run for another 30 metres before Andrew Robertson pulled him down at Strathaven's own 5m line. The ball was knocked-on in the tackle which ended the game level.
Final Score Uddingston 1 - 1 Strathaven
In the second game Uddngston's missing players had finally turned-up and they were able to field a team entirely of their own. This did seem to make a difference in the game as the home team got off to a better start scoring several tries without answer. Lucas Blair made a try-saving clearance kick to half-way and Andrew Robertson saved a try with another great tackle. Lucas made a fantastic charge-down of a clearance kick from Uddingston, forcing the ball into touch in the process Eventually Strathaven got on the scoreboard with a Lucas Blair try late in the first half followed by one at half-time by Ewan Watson. Half-time score 6 - 2. Lucas Blair made a great try-saving tackle down the left wing however a disappointing reaction from the Uddingston player led to Lucas getting a boot into his leg and the Uddy player being taken off the pitch and replaced. Two more tries from the home team finished the game 8 - 2.
Final Score Uddingston 8 - 2 Strathaven
This was a disappointing fixture for P6 and the coaches; there was a lack of awareness shown by Uddingston in the game-coaching of some of the P6 law variations. Again there was an abundance of tackles pinning the arms or targetting the ball by the home team; however this is not the reason Strathaven lost the second game. They didn't come together as a team on this occasion and again the tackling was weak. Some risky defensive play cost a few tries too. The boys will learn from this defeat and come back stronger.
Squad for the day: - Andrew Robertson, Ben Allan, Duncan Campbell, Ewan Watson (Captain), Gabriel Traill, Gregor Hair, Lachlan McGee, Lucas Blair, Luke Kennedy, Matthew Dixon, Rory Mullen, Ross MacDonald, Sam Howie, Tom O'Hara, Oli Moir, Andrew and Sam also made appearances in the P7 matches.
