P6 travelled to Cumnock for the first tournament of the season and to defend their title from last year at P5. Three matches were planned with a few mixed teams present on the day. Conditions were excellent for rugby and the pitches firm and flat for a change. After a very long warm-up period the games finally got under way about 1130 hrs

First match - Kilmarnock/Garnock v Strathaven

Strathaven kicked-off the tournament against this mixed team most of whom had played against us last year. In a perfect start, Strathaven strongman Ewan Watson blasted his way down the right wing for the opening try inside the first minute. Not shocked by this the opposition gathered themselves and levelled the score in the second minute only for Ewan to repeat his effort three minutes later to take the lead again. A confident display of team rugby by Strathaven produced three more tries by Andrew Robertson (7), Ewan Watson (9) and Lucas Blair (10) to lead 2 - 5. Killie/Garnock scored once more before Lucas Blair finally put the game beyond doubt with a last minute try.

Final Score Kilmarnock/Garnock 2 - 6 Strathaven

Second Match - Stewartry v Strathaven

This team were totally new to the P6 boys and an unknown quantity. Not put off by this they got off to a blistering start yet again with another first minute try this time from Lucas Blair. Ewan Watson got his fourth of the day on the third minute before Stewartry opened their scoring two minutes later. Some excellent support play and powerful, confident rucking allowed Strathaven to score three more tries from Matthew Dixon (6), Luke Kennedy (10 and Lucas Blair (11).

Final Score Stewartry 1 - 5 Strathaven

Third Match Cumnock/Irvine v Strathaven

This team always looked to be the toughest to beat and the game didn't disappoint. This time Strathaven were on the receiving end of an early try going 1 - 0 down inside a couple of minutes. Coping with this early upset the boys got stuck in and played hard and fast with the opposition. Their efforts were rewarded when Sam Howie levelled the score in the fifth minute and Andrew Robertson weaved his way to a try to take the lead. The game carried on with an even battle on both sides before Luke Kennedy finally clinched the victory in the twelfth minute.

Final Score Cumnock/Irvine 1 - 3 Strathaven

Strathaven P6 Tournament Champions

This was a confident display from the P6 boys away from home and against new opposition and they retain their title from last year. Strong rucking and increased efforts from everyone gave the team the edge. It was particularly good to see the newer players raising their game and committing to the tackling better. Well done.

Squad for the day - Andrew Robertson, Ben Allan, Ewan Watson, Gregor Hair, Lachlan McGee, Lucas Blair, Luke Kennedy, Matthew Dixon, Rory Mullen, Ross MacDonald, Sam Howie (Capt) and Tom O'Hara.
