Match Report by Russell Beaton

A squad of 13 P4/P5 Shark's turned to at Arbroath on what was a glorious November morning ready to play against the host team.

The coaches decided to split the group into two teams with our more experienced players making the first team and our less experienced players the second team. Arbroath were made aware of our team make up and were keen to match whatever the Sharks could put in their way.

The start of the first match was delayed by the referee as not all Arbroath players had a gum shield. After discussion with the host team the decision stood that unless a gum shield was used then you were not able to play. There are various opinions on this issue but it should be agreed that the safety of the players is paramount and as unpalatable as it may be if your child does not have a gum shield with them on either a training or match day it is the right thing to do and not let them take part in any contact that may result in injury.

The first game saw our experienced lads put in a very strong performance with good tackling, handling, passing and support play resulting in nine tries to the host teams two - good effort by all, well done lads. For the second game our less experienced players took to the field keen to show the coaches what they could do. The lads certainly did not disappoint with some fine individual running, backed up by a great defensive effort and strong tackling when it was needed. The game was well balanced, however the host team took the game at five tries to four. There were certainly signs of continued improvement and development from our newer Sharks - Russell, Lindsay, Jim and Jamie were all very proud of your performance today - well done.

Arbroath were keen for one last game so the experienced Sharks returned to the field ready once again to impress - and impress they did. It was an outstanding team performance to which Arbroath had no answer, an ominous display of aggressive tackling, fine running and support play - it was a joy to watch as ten tries were scored with our hosts unable to breach our try line for the whole of the game. If this type of form can be sustained and improved upon then the mighty Sharks are a real force to be reckoned with.

As with all games however we must look to learn and there is still work to be done on how we come into and work to win over the ball during a ruck.

Once again well done to all players today and a warm welcome to Craig Tocher who is the latest addition to our squad. And thanks to Arbroath for hosting today's games.
