Following last week's first defeat of the season Streethouse looked to return to winning ways against one of last season's title rivals Fairburn.
Fairburn skipper Mark Abdy won the toss and on a deck that had been covered for the last couple of days invited Streethouse to bat. The Streethouse innings began with the in form Paul Langley, fresh from his 64 last week at Featherstone (which I forgot to mention in my last report, sorry!) and returning from injury Jonathan Hughes. Early on it looked like a good toss to have won as both openers were beaten by seam movement and tennis ball like bounce.
Hughes was the first to go, dragging onto his stumps for 4 via his gloves from Guy Abdy. Langley followed him soon after, caught and bowled off a leading edge by Craig Piggott. With Streethouse in early trouble Steve Bourne and Mark Robinson looked to consolidate the innings and saw off the opening bowlers, Bourne in particular relieving the pressure by taking 13 from Jake Abdy's solitary over. However, in the very next over Bourne was caught behind off the bowling of Piggott for 21.
Fairburn turned to spinners with Streethouse three down as Bobby Banerjee and Paul Clark looked to squeeze the run rate and build pressure. This proved successful early on with Clark trapping Robinson LBW attempting to sweep for 18, bringing Alwyn Dyke to the crease. Even with Streethouse four down, Ismail Patel looked to take on the spinners, Banerjee in particular, hitting down the ground for a maximum and following it up with a swept six. Patel rode his look at times but he and Dyke built a partnership allowing Streethouse to take the attack to the spinners as the overs ticked by.
With few overs remaining and the magical 180 total in striking distance Patel and Dyke looked to accelerate but were both caught at long on off the bowling of Paul Clark. Liam Geddis took up the challenge of trying to get 20 off the last over to achieve the 180 total and maximum batting bonus points with the first three deliveries of the over going for 6, 6 and 4, however Geddis was stumped attempting a repeat dose of something massive and Streethouse closed tantalisingly close on 179 for 7.
Both teams were pleased with their first innings effort and the Fairburn reply got underway with James Clegg and Ryan Greatrick. Conditions were similar to the first innings and Scott Bland and Richard Wild made the most of them, passing the edge on many occasions. Bland eventually got the breakthrough removing Clegg for 10 with a sharp return catch. A huge breakthrough soon followed with danger man Piggott snaffled low to the ground at first slip by Richard Vigars off Bland for just 3. Bland completed his impressive spell having Ian Jones caught in the gully for 15 and finish with figures of 3 for 39 from his 14 overs. Bland was ably supported by Wild bowling a tight spell of 12 overs for just 28 runs from the other end.
Michael Bates replaced Wild from the bottom end and continued to squeeze the run rate, the other end proved more problematic with Ismail Patel bowling just 1 over for 9 and appearing to be injured, and then Richard Vigars following another 1 over spell. With pressure building and the run rate increasing Greatrick finally fell for 46 from a direct hit by Hughes at the non-striker's end from extra cover.
Hughes came on to bowl and picked up a wicket immediately Guy Abdy caught and bowled for 13. Brother Mark soon followed caught behind off the bowling of Bates for 6. With Streethouse looking on top Jake Abdy and Nathan Smith looked to accelerate with some good running and picking up the occasional boundary. Richard Vigars replaced Bates to bowl at the death and contained the run rate well and finally broke the Adby/Smith partnership with a smart run out on his follow through, Jake Abdy the man out for 25. Smith fell immediately afterwards, stumped off the bowling of Vigars for 24. Fairburn's last hope was in the form of Banerjee and he fell for just 5 caught at long off from the bowling of Hughes.
With only 1 wicket left in the tent and an almost impossible task for two tail end batsmen Fairburn shut up shop and were content to deny Streethouse the extra points by not being bowled out
