Following last week’s very disappointing result against Old Priorians

Chairman’s Chatter

Following last week’s very disappointing result against Old Priorians today we welcome Chelmsford to Whittome Field for our second of three home matches this month. Our next home match is on January 28th against Tring, and we will need a large crowd to help us on our way against them.
Our guests today have also found it a difficult season, and after our poor display last week I would expect them to be coming here thinking they could get something out of the game. Well let’s hope not.
Outside of playing matters the club has some big decisions to make over the coming weeks as we look to take the club forward, not only how we cope with the increase in membership in all areas as we see mini and youth numbers steady, girls increasing and senior rugby continuing with three teams. Other clubs also have increasing numbers, and when they come to visit us they need to park their cars. Last week we had over 200 cars at the club.
But also with things like pitch use, and how we manage them to allow all teams a fair shot at playing on the main pitch in front of the club house; and also how we can attract new players to Sudbury and those returning from university etc. to come back and support the club.
I know it’s a long way off, but we are already discussing summer activities, so keep a lookout for boot camps, touch and 7s tournaments. But before all of that we have the Six Nations to look forward to, and the club will be showing the matches on the screens. Even if we do not have a home match we will be open, so please feel free to get down to the club for a beer, and we will have food on offer as well.
Finally I am sure most of you are aware that our head coach Ben Scully worked alongside the England team during the Autumn internationals, and stole the show when he seemed to appear on the TV more than some of the players.
Well, as a thank you for all his hard work Paul Gustard, the England defence coach, has offered to take a training session for the seniors and invited others. This will be taking place next Tuesday (January 17), so if you would like to see a training session then please come to the club from 6.30pm. The clubhouse will be open and food will be available.
Thanks to everyone for your continued support. We need every bit of sponsorship we can get, so if you know of any one who might be interested in sponsorship then please get them to call me on 07767 665447.
Have a great day.
