Sunderland travelled to sunny Skipton on Sunday and enjoyed some great rugby.
Sunderland 3 – Keighley 3
Their first match was against a tough and physically much bigger Keighley side and we were informed they were used to winning all matches, having just won against Skipton 10 tries to nil.
Sunderland defence were immediately put to the test as Keighley barged through a try in the opening minutes, and although on the back foot Sunderland responded with a tremendous single effort by Ben Hutchinson who equalised after running over half the length of the pitch. Keighleys set pieces were proving too much for Sunderlands defence and after some great tackles by Hutchinson, Adam Armstrong, and Dean Edmundson they managed a further score before half time. Half time score 2-1 to Keighley.
The second half saw a great display of passing between Iwan Phillips, Hutchinson and Rowan James which in turn created a chance for Tye Hanlon to push through and score agreat equalising try. However, Keighley bounced back immediately with fast pace to remain in the lead yet again. Nail-biting drama enfolded as Luke Newby tackled his heart out winning ball just in time for Ben Hutchinson to equalise on the final whistle.
