Summer League Match 1

vs Stockton

Sunderland 3 vs 1 Stockton

Sunderland Men made a good start to their Summer League campaign with a 3-1 beating of rivals Stockton.
Both teams put out a mixture of 1st to 3rd teamers with Stockton having their normal youthful players causing havoc with their skill and pace. However Sunderland's experience paid off with more chances falling to them in front of goal with Rocket bagging a brace and Jonny Pearson scoring the third. Sunderland's goalkeeper Andy Wilkinson had a fine game except for the only Stockton goal coming from a misjudged penalty corner.

All the Sunderland players will agree that they were a bit rusty but with a good rotation system with the bench staying fresh paid dividends with players putting in 100%.

Sunderland dominated the midfield in the 1st half with veteran Neil Sparrowhawk and Neale Holmes linking well. Sunderland could have scored more but chances falling to Ian McGinley and James Bibby were squandered however both players are looking promising for the coming season with Mr Bibby pushing for a regular 2nd team spot.

There was also a welcome return to the team of Sam Middleton who played well although had a few dodgy moments with the ball who will hopefully play a full season for Sunderland this coming season.

Sunderland Team: Andy Wilkinson (Goal), Sam Evans, Sam Middleton, Tom Grant, Andy Crute, Jonny Pearson, Jonathan Argile, Pete Renshaw, Callum Richardson, Neil Sparrowhawk, Neale Holmes, Ian McGinley, James Bibby and Duncan Stevens
