History

Sutton Benger RFC is the newest and friendliest rugby club in Wiltshire.

The club was founded in 2002 and is based in the picturesque village of Sutton Benger near Chippenham, and just off junction 17 of the M4.

We ply our trade in Dorset & Wilts Division 1 North, after being promoted in recent seasons . We play competitive but social rugby in the traditional spirit of the game. We have superb home ground, training and changing facilities, and high quality coaching setup. As you would expect we are always on the lookout for new players of any ability - young, old or anything in between.

The Story so far

SBRFC grew quickly from an idea conceived by Richard Waddington and supported by Simon Kingsley and Dave Brown in the summer of 2002. Initially the reaction within the village was slow and few people thought it would get off the ground. Despite this the 1st training session was held on 3rd of November ,a cold Saturday morning @ the Rec with 15 potential players present.

As a consequence of this successful session, a team was selected and with borrowed shirts a match was arranged with Minety II’s. Even at this early stage, a squad of 18 players was assembled .

Playing as Benger Nomads, further fixtures took place against local opposition until sponsorship by Wadsworth Brewery resulted in a set of shirts and a name change to The Wellesley Arms.

The club developed well in its 1st two season playing a total of 21 friendly fixtures. With planned entry into the S. Wilts. League, the club was fortunate to secure the services of Nick Cavil, a Level 3 coach.

The 1st league season (04/05) resulted in several wins and, as always, the commitment to fulfil all fixtures was satisfied. The recruitment of a number of players during the summer of 05 resulted in a promising preseason and a dramatic lowering of the average playing age!!

The club has now progressed over the past four seasons and now plays in Dorset and Wilts 1 North competing against teams with a much larger player base.
