Great sucess for the ice bucket challenge which saw a colts team reunited

On Wednesday night, over 100 mini, junior and senior players assembled at the Roger Smoldon ground to take part in a mass #icebucketchallenge. The event popularised by celebrities worldwide was organised in support of John Wheelwright, a former Colt and parent of a current under 14’s team player and his nominated charity MacMillan Cancer Support. John, was kindly escorted from Good Hope hospital for the evening by his consultant Ron, and specialist ICU nurse Larry to watch his son train, and to launch the big splash!

After photo’s were taken, children as young as 5 lined up to tip an ice cold bucket of water on their heads whilst nominating a family member or friend to follow. Being ever gallant, the senior players let the women and children go first with the hope that iced water supplies would run out. Their tactics were short-lived when a fire appliance from the local Sutton Coldfield station joined in support of the event and blasted the assembled players with icy water!

John has asked that all donations are made to MacMillan Cancer Support. The rugby community showed their generosity by donating over £400 on the night for the ‘Wheelwright Ice Bucket Challenge’. Whilst momentum is high and with donations still coming in, anyone else who would care to donate can do so at www.justgiving.com/icebucketonyourhead.

John and his wife Sally, along with sons Harry and Charlie want to offer their heartfelt thanks to all that supported this event, and those in addition that have made donations to the MacMillan Cancer Support charity.

Finally, in the spirit of the #icebucketchallenge Sutton Coldfield RFC nominate Lichfield RFC, Veseyans RFC and Spartans RFC to take up the challenge! If you know people at those clubs, please make them aware that they have limited time to complete the challenge and donate to the MacMillan charity at the justgiving address above.

Well done to all those involved, especially those who worked hard to pull this all together at very short notice.

The challeneg is now set to allthe other clubs in the area, can you better the 100+ who we had turn up?
