After a run of games on the 3G it was good for Chris Keoghs troops to finally get a game on grass in pre season.
With Lee Parsons, Rikki Baines, Danny Carey Bartrum, Harry Harris, Joey Butlin and Matt Jackson all ruled out it was again a mixed side that took to the field against one of the favourites for the Northern Premier Division.
Sutton started well and a ball from the right found Matt Gardner whose header went just wide of Cranes goal. From then on Hednesford dominated the first half and took the lead through REY on 16 minutes. Sutton were wasteful in possession time and time again and WOLFE was causing no end of trouble down the left hand side. Hednesford should have scored more but good work from HATHAWAY in the Royals goal denied REY and then LENNON before OSBOURNE hit a fierce shot just wide. Sutton made a token break into the Hednesford half and a deep cross from LUND was met by CHAPMAN at the far post who slammed his shot past CRANE and Sutton went into the break level.
The 2nd half was a complete contrast to the 1st and it was Sutton who looked the brighter of the 2 teams. Good work from RATHBONE and SHELDON opened up a chance for GARDNER whose shot was somehow scrambled away by CRANE. And them THOMPSON turned superbly in the box and forced CRANE into another fine save. Hednesford had their own chances but HATHAWAY was again in fine form to keep them at bay.
A number of subs for both teams resulted in play becoming a little scrappy and after Sutton failed to clear O'CONNOR drilled home from the edge of the area to give the hosts the lead. Sutton continued to press forward and after great work between GARDNER RATHBONE and then SHELDON who was fouled on the edge of the area CHAPMAN despatched the resulting free kick beyond CRANE to even up the scores.
Hednesford could have snatched a late winner but it ended 2 all and Sutton now move into the next game this Saturday against Romulus in the Sutton Charity Cup.
