SUTTON UNLUCKY NOT TO COME AWAY WITH A SHARE OF THE POINTS
Sutton travelled for their opening game of the season to the oldest football club in the world and one of the favourites for the league when they met Sheffield FC at the BT Stadium in Dronfield.
Sutton began brightly and they were the first to take the lead in the 18th minute when a neat piece of interchanging play between Matt Dodd, Mark Bellingham and Jimmy Quiggin ended with Quiggin crossing the ball across the Sheffield goalmouth for Craig Marshall to open his account with a simple tap in.
Instead of this spurring Sutton and encouraging them to continue there grip on the game they fell apart at the back and were punished for a couple of glaring defensive errors. The first in the 23rd minute resulted in Sutton leaving a wide gap down their left with defender Quiggin much too far up field and Sheffield exploited the space and Stephen Woolley fired home from the edge of the box and a shot Niall Cooper in goal would have been dissapointed not to keep out.
The second was also the result of a long Sheffield ball into the open space down the left that again exposed the defence and a ball into the box found Connor Higginson who made no mistake from 6 yards.
Sheffield were not finished yet and with Sutton struggling to get control in midfield and the defence rocking a failure to clear by Jon Jones resulted in a cross to the far post which was easily headed home by Andrew Gasgoigne right on the stroke of half time.

The second half began with a couple of substitutions with Quiggin and Danny Lennon being substituted by Ed Booth and Dean Rathbone and a change in formation to 3 at the back.
This worked well for them and they took control of the game and within minutes a corner from the right was met with a powerful header from Ed Booth but it crashed against the crossbar. It was now all Sutton and they were camped in the Sheffield half with the hosts being restricted to the occasional break. But getting the ball into the net was proving difficult with Sheffield defending for all their worth.
It was substitute James Reid who finally scored in the 80th Minute when he headed home at the far post from a cross from the Matt Jackson.
Sutton continued to throw everything at Sheffield to get the equaliser, but Sheffield defended stoutly until the final whistle and came away with a result that would not have been unfair if it had ended in a draw . This was an excellent game of football for the opening game of the season.
