Royals miss out on overall Junior Premier League title
Following a creditable draw away at Bristol last week, Sutton knew a win by more than two clear goals would be required to secure the overall U U16's Junior Premier League title, in the final play-off game against other Divisional winners Kidderminster.
But Sutton's lacklustre performance on the day just wasn't enough to secure the win and the title. In fact for the second week running, Royals U16's had to come back from 2-0 down and despite showing a lot of character were always chasing the game until the final quarter. In all fairness a draw was probably a fair result, as Kidderminster had shown a lot of effort and enterprise to thwart Sutton and hit them on the counter. Kidderminster clearly came with a game plan of getting men behind the ball and making it hard for Sutton, who lacked ideas and sufficient guile at times to break down a resolute Kidderminster team. The extremely warm weather may also have been a factor as Sutton failed to play with any real tempo until the latter stages of the game after Sutton had brought it back to 3-3 and then showed great effort to get the win; but it was all a bit too little, too late!
The boys, however, can be proud of their achievements during a long hard season and the experience of these play-off games will all help in their development as a person and a player.
Well done to Royals U16's and all teams we have competed with in the Junior Premier League this season.
