Blidworth 2-3 Sutton Town
Snipes win at a rain soaked Blidworth to take third spot.
Report by Peter Bough
Sutton took maximum points from a rain soaked Blidworth Welfare ground, but can find themselves rather fortunate to have done so.
To be fair Blidworth looked a far cry from a team that had just lost three on the bounce, and from their second half performance, they deserved at least a share of the spoils.
Sutton almost took the lead with just six minutes on the clock.
Snipes M.O.M.Dean Rick's sublime ball inside from the right flank found Nathan Hollinworth, his powerfull drive flew just past the right hand post.
Blidworth hit back and pressure from the Snipes defence saw Michael Syrett smash a shot agonizingly wide.
Sutton hit straight back but a Andy White header was easily collected by Stanthorpe. The Snipes had more fluency in their play and were begining to assume control of the game.
The break through came with 25 minutes gone. a long through ball found Rick's just inside the box, his rasping drive left Stanthorpe standing.
Ten minutes later it was 2-0. Andy White was scythed down by Craig Gould. Up stepped Dayle Gilliatt who's rasping free kick flew into the top right hand of goal.
Sutton almost grabbed a third right on half-time. Gavin Short smashed in a shot from the edge of the box, only to see his effort scrambled off the line by Toddhunter.
Blidworth looked a changed side as the second half got under way as they pressed and harrised Sutton out of their usual polished stride and had Sutton's midfield at 6s & 7s.Blidworth had the edge and deservedly pulled a goal back on 52 minutes and what a goal it was, with Zak Websters blistering 25 yard drive almost ripping the netting.
However, 5 minutes later and totally against the run of play, Sutton restored their two goal advantage, but it was a superbly taken goal from Rick's.
Craig Stanton's superb cross from the right flank cleared the Blidworth defence and Rick's sent his header loopin over the advancing Stanthorpe to nestle into the back of the goal.
To their credit Blidworth never gave up, and 6 minutes later they'd pulled the deficit back. A tremendous shot from Syrett smashed against the angle and Moult tapped the rebound in.
Sutton where riding their luck and were hanging on by a thread. Blidworth came close to an equaliser riht on full time. With Shephard well beaten and much to the relief of the Snipe. Jamie Senior's craashed in a shot that just whistled just past the upright.
