Following on from my inaugural season in charge as Vice President’s secretary I would like to inform you that I have been voted in for a second term. It was an extremely close call in the one horse race, but nevertheless I am honoured to have been re-elected!
Last season proved a challenging one for our club in several ways;
The First XV had a tough season against some particularly strong opposition, but the way they bonded and built their team spirit throughout the campaign was typified with a final game victory to secure their Eastern Counties League 1 status against promotion hopefuls
Similarly the Second XV faced their own challenges, specifically with stable playing numbers, but were extremely proud to ensure they fielded a team in every match regardless of the numbers available and thus secure their position in Eastern Counties League 3.
The Youth and Mini’s section continued to thrive and at times punched well above our “small club” status on often cold and damp Sunday mornings, with regular victories against the likes of North Walsham, Norwich, Diss and West Norfolk to name but a few of the highlights. Numbers are thriving and the future does seem to be extremely rosy if we can continue to develop this for the 2016 – 2017 season.
And finally the financial status of the club came under immense pressure with the ever growing need for maintenance and investment as the facility we are luckily enough to inhabit continues to age. A loss of £3k was announced at the AGM which may give you an idea of how expensive it is to run a club of this size.
The committee are working extremely hard to keep on top of the requirements each season, but even given our charitable status this does depend solely on income generated.
Given the above - the contributions that last year’s VP’s made was invaluable in ensuring that Swaffham RUFC can continue to provide not just rugby, but an important recreational facility in the local and wider communities that we touch. Without the generosity of many
individuals and businesses this just wouldn’t be possible.
My delectable assistant (the dashing Mr Eric “Yoda” Nye) and I have agreed that in principal last year’s VP structure worked well and as such we will again be looking to host Five Lunches throughout the campaign, with an additional Sixth buffet meal for the final home game – which will be chargeable outside of the normal VP subscription.
The cost for the 2016-17 season will be maintained as a minimum donation of £80 for the five lunches and as always we are eternally grateful for those who are able to donate more for the cause. Any amounts you personally donate can be gift aided, or if via a business can be
invoiced for corporation tax savings purposes.
If you have not been a Vice President member previously the day generally consists of a three course meal, cheese & biscuits, Port & coffee, free table wine, a raffle, an auction and even a theme for the day that adds a little spice to the occasion. I personally was extremely
pleased to see the number of ladies we had present last year and this is something we would like to expand on for the forthcoming season as we promote our true family environment.

Saturday 17th December 2016 – 2nd XV v Watton
Saturday 28th January 2017 – 1st XV v Bury St Edmunds III
Saturday 11th March 2017 – 1st XV v Beccles
Saturday 8th April 2017 – 1st XV v Newmarket (Chargeable buffet lunch)
