Bristol Sonics forced to use 1st Team to dig out a win against St George

SWINDON St George assistant coach Carl Baker said he was left ‘depressed’ by his side’s narrow defeat against Bristol Sonics last weekend.

St George looked to be en route to their first win of the season as they built on the strong performances of recent weeks as they took on Bristol.

The Greenbridge Road side came roaring out of the blocks with two tries in the first 15 minutes to stun their hosts.

The two sides continued to swap scores as the game progressed with Bristol taking their ultimately decisive lead with 25 minutes remaining in the second half.

Baker was left gutted as St George were unable to break down the Sonics one last time but thought his side coud not have given more in search of their first win.

“It was very disappointing because we really thought that was our game, there was not a man on the field who didn’t give it everything,” he told the Advertiser. “A lot of the time when we travel away it always takes us a while to get out of the car, to get mentally ready for the game. On Saturday everyone got together on the field and you could see we were ready from the start.

“We got two unanswered tries in the first 15 minutes, we started the game when that whistle blew, not 15-2-12 minutes later. It was tit-for-tat the whole game long. Twice we had the ball on their try line and they took an interception, it shows the mentality of the team that on both occasions, Liam Rowe and Dan Bown, took them down twice on our try line, we never gave up. On the final whistle we got very unlucky.
