Richard Cairns Follows In Ben Kolowoski’s Footsteps
Please sponsor Cairns as he prepares for April's notorious "Marathon Des Sables" - a 6 day, 151 Mile endurance race across the Sahara Desert.
On the 8th April 2012 I will be at the starting line of the Marathon Des Sables 2012, it is a 6 day 151 Mile endurance race across the Sahara Desert in Morocco.
I will be carrying everything that I will need for the duration (apart from a tent) on my back in a rucksack (food, clothes, medical kit sleeping bag etc). Water is rationed and handed out at each checkpoint.
I will be experiencing mid-day temperatures of up to 120˚F, The terrain is uneven rocky, stone ground as well as 15-20% of the distance being is Sand dunes. On the 4th day, I will ( all being well) set off across the barren wilderness to complete a 45-50 mile stage. Few people complete this before dark that evening and some will not come in till after the next night This is then followed by the 42k Marathon stage!! Bring it on.
The two charities I have chosen to support are Naomi House/Jacksplace hospice and St. Michael’s Hospice North Hampshire.
Naomi House/Jacksplace is for children and young adults that provides support to children and young people with conditions that mean they are unlikely to live to become adults.
St. Michael’s Hospice Basingstoke (North Hampshire) enables people faced with a life limiting illness, their families and carers, to attain the highest possible quality of life by providing a choice of specialist care and support.
