First game blues as Tadley RFC 2nds fall to a strong Newbury team.
Tadley well beaten.
The game started evenly, as Tadley brought confidence with a strong team and new captain Connor Dyment. With Tadley trying a kicking early on with allegedly veteran Kev Hughes coming back into the Tadley RFC team after a 2 year break and debutant Ben Combes starting at 10, these two put up some lovely kicks, but worryingly not all the chasing was as good. The first major change was the arrival of Dan Folwer 15 minutes into the game.... (Holiday), this lead to a strong Tadley scrum, but a poor chase from the kick lead to Newbury going close in the corner and Tadley trying to clear with a 22 dropout. As Newbury claimed the ball their backs came alive cutting through the Tadley line to let the big number 3 (very good player....) to power over through the attempted tackles to open the scoring which was converted... Just 3 minutes later Newbury 's backs went wide and scored in the corner, this conversion was missed. To be fair the Newbury 10 did not have his kicking boots on this day this showed as he missed most of his kicks, must of been the same kicking school as some of our veteran players. 2 minutes later another Newbury try from their centre straight under the posts converted, then we had to wait a whole 5 minutes before they scored again again from the big number 3, this conversion was missed so he had a breather. Tadley were still plugging away but this was fast becoming the Newbury highlight show when on 35 minutes another Newbury try was awarded as again they cut through the centres, missed. this lead to Adien limping off (fat bloke standing on him) and Sam Crawford coming on. Tadley then decided to put some pressure on the Newbury try line with Newbury being caught offside multiple times but Tadley with the try line begging Tadley were turned over and the pressure was cleared by Newbury.
Half Time. Newbury 29 Tadley 0
Half Time saw another interchange, switch with Connor Dyment leaving the field and Neil Davidson joining, this unfortunately didn't change proceeding's as with another turn over Newbury scored again under the posts again missed. They then butchered a chance dropping the ball on the line but made up for it 2 minutes later with another try. Tis seemed to wake Tadley up a bit for this second half for which apart from the scrums had been spectators.. With Josh Hall taking good ball from Bens kick offs, Tadley came into the game but they just could not break through the Newbury line with strong tackling and more aggression shown over the park. Tadley's input into the game did slow the Newbury charge though, with the fans having to wait till the 60th minute for Newbury to score again, much to |Matt Wickens delight as it was his boy that scored even though he dropped it.. ( Its wasn't the first bad Newbury knock on that the ref missed), again the conversion was missed. Unfortunatley for Tadley it had not ended yet and fro the ko which didn't go 10 Newbury ran into the corner for another Try which to most peoples supprise was converted. After this the game broke up with Saul Morgan killing the Newbury 19 whith a cracking hit (not his first), unfortunately it was just early leading to only Newburys second penalty of the game. This lead to a break as the poor player had to wait for a neck brace and we movedover to the sand box, even with Tadley and Newbury asking for the whistle the ref wanted to play the last 3-4 minutes. This let Newbury score two more try's and let the prop complete his hat rick , leaving the final score Newbury 67 - Tadley 0.
This was a very disappointing performance from Tadley after a confident start, but you aren't going to compete if your 9 is doing more rucking than anyone else. It has showed Tadley what level they need to up their game to, to compete in this league Tadley will need to train together with the forwards running a bit more around the pitch not walking, and the backs making their hits.
Next Saturday Tadley Host High Wycombe and will want to put this blip behind them, I'm sorry for being overly negative but it wasn't that good. On to better things for Tadley RFC.
