Well, not many could have predicted the quality of the performance that was put on show for all to watch on Saturday as the U21's faced their first stiff test of the season against a very big U21 Kumeu side.
What was served up was a feast of free flowing rugby that was set up by some first class forwards work and some excellent execution from the backs. What was more satisfying was that the players earned every ounce of their victory and the performance was one that had large amounts of the work that had been training for during the week.
Kumeu to their credit battled all day and were a good side but they came up against a team who wanted to show the desire and tenacity that they have in them to deliver a good brand of rugby and a winning culture. They certainly did that! Kumue lost their 10 to a nasty looking knee injury and Takapuna wish him a speedy recovery.
A 6 try haul was topped up by 3 penalties and 3 conversions from Connor McMahon
who guided his team around the field well. The only sour note for the boys was that they lost half back Matt Moxley to a dislocated shoulder. The lads wishing Mox well and a speedy recovery!
Player of the day was Luke Wainui
who once again roase to the challenge of the day and scored a barnstorming try. The backs chipped in with 3 tries on the day and the forwards produced the other three.
A great performance and great result! It will mean nothing if the lads don't back it up next week against old foes North Shore.
A big thanks to Gordon Simpson and the team at Quarry Bar who sponsor our player of the day. Quality food and drink at the Quarry Bar, Smales Farm, try it out, you wont be disappointed!
