Takapuna U21 v College Rifles U21
Saturday's performance and win over College Rifles was a good reminder for the lads that if they stick to what they know and follow the patterns they have been working on that the results will come. A 12-5 win over Rifles being the final score was good reward for the effort put in.
A solid team effort and whilst low on available players there was a level of cohesiveness that was evident to those who watched the game. Defense was good and the boys played well in patches to show that there was much to look forward this year. A huge effort form the boys who played in the front row was rewarded with a win and some real grit and determination was shown in tough circumstances.
Fraser brown had an excellent game in a new look back three and he guided the Takapuna counter attack with some real nice touches and running. Nick Arnold has been a revelation in his early hit outs and Ollie Callaghan showed some deft stepping at times. Both tries were scored on the day by the wingers Brown and Callaghan which was good to see.
In the forwards there were the usual consistent performances from those who have delivered week after week in recent games but Luke Wainui found another gear to deliver some powerful runs from number 8 and the other forwards fed off of that. At the hub of all things good was James Stolten who playing at both loose and tight head prop put in a huge shift. His performance won him the player of the day award and was just reward for some outstanding work at the breakdown and at scrum time.
It was good to see the comeback from injury of Logan Stevens and Mark Coleman with the former doing some serious clearing of bodies at breakdowns which allowed some excellent opportunities to counter ruck.
For all the good that was on show there was still plenty for the boys to work on and the next few weeks will allow that to continue in training.
Next week it is Eden RFC who come to Takapuna for a preseason game before the start of the senior season so get down and support the younger lads from 11am.
