Tamworth Lose Out To Walsall
Walsall 14 Tamworth 7
Tamworth travelled to Walsall with the sides only separated in the league by a single point.
The visitors started brightly and had plenty of possession but a series of handling errors combined with some stout defending by the hosts saw the game remain scoreless until the deadlock was finally broken in the 26th minute when some good carries from the Tamworth forwards saw them penetrate deep into Walsall territory when the ball was whipped out to the wing and Jimmy Carroll
finished well to give Tamworth the lead. Danny Norton
converted and Tamworth led 0-7.
Walsall opened their account 10 minutes later with a penalty when Tamworth failed to roll away from the breakdown. 3-7
Norton had a chance to extend Tamworth’s lead with a long range penalty only to see it fall agonisingly short of the cross bar.
Tamworth were dealt a blow just before the break when a fairly innocuous push saw Conor Banham
heading for the sin bin but were happy to go into the break with a narrow lead.
The second period saw Walsall taking advantage of their numerical advantage by pinning Tamworth back in their own half and for 10 minutes it was all Tamworth could do to hang on.
Some tenacious defence saw the visitors hold out for the remainder of the sin bin period but Walsall had grown in confidence and with 2 penalty’s in 5 minutes got their noses in front for the first time in the match 9-7.
Tamworth’s high penalty count would ultimately seal their downfall in this match as a second yellow card this time for Kieren Jackson saw them reduced to 14 again and fairly quickly Walsall took advantage of the miss match in numbers and the winger scored a nice try in the corner 14-7
Tamworth finished strongly but to no avail as time ran out and they had to be satisfied with a losing bonus point.
