After a brilliant start to the league season United and the Wanderers look to build momentum this Saturday. The Wanderers take on local rivals the Wyvern in the very first all Taunton league derby (ko 3pm at Hyde Park) and there is great excitement in the build up for these two old rivals and great friends. Ex-Wyvern players include current 2nd XV backrow Jack Wren, current Titan's second row Ross Ward and a number of the Wanderers' squad have been known to put a red shirt on over the years. The Wyvern enjoy the services of ex Wanderers' prop and Godson to club Chairman Pete Stone, Jamie Cullan and young Richard Hodge who also used to ply his trade at Hyde Park. The player's have a great mutual respect for each other but there is no doubt both teams will want to win this game and will be going all out this week at training in preparation for Saturday.
The United travel to Winscombe for what will be a hard fought contest against a team that is known for their strong pack and unforgiving home crowd. The young squad showed last Saturday that they are more than up for the challenge ahead for them and have clearly benefited from the pre-season coaching of Mark Hawkes. New signings Andy Ford and Liam Cullan, who have commented on the excellent facilities and warm welcome received, will look to cement their place within this highly competitive team.
Whatever the result, and we hope for the very best, there will be drinks and good cheer after the game as the Wanderers will not only be celebrating hosting the first local league derby but young hooker Andy Farley's headwetting of his second daughter Charlotte. United will no doubt hurry up and get back to catch up with the merriment!
