A Great Advert for National 2 Rugby
The Titans claim the win overcome a determined Redingensians and return to form after their 2 successive defeats
This was 3rd v 4th and was billed as the game of the week in the league and both teams didn’t disappoint with a great display of rugby that was an excellent advert for National League rugby, something that didn’t go unnoticed by Redingensians Director of Rugby Gary Reynolds “I think whoever came to watch a National 2 game today and paid to get in certainly got their monies worth. I thought both teams put a fantastic performance in. I thought the referee had a great game and contributed to the spectacle and let the game flow as it needed to.”
It was the Rams that started the game with a bang going over in the opening minutes with a try for prop Andy Berry which was converted by Thomas Humberstone. The game then settled down with both defences seemingly on top before the Titans drew level with a try from back rower Brett Harvey. From a lineout close to the Redingensians try line the Titans pack were felled just short. The forwards kept it close before the ball was spun out to Nick Mason to crash it up. As the ball was recycled a few more times Harvey picked and drove over the line. The extras added by Toby East.
The Rams tried to get their powerful mauling game into play, but it was the Titans that seemed to control the game towards the end of the first half and were rewarded with a penalty kicked by East to give them a half time lead of 10 – 7.
Once again it was the visitors that started the half the brightest with a try from winger Jak Rossiter again converted by Humberstone to give them a 4 point lead. The hosts then started to control the ball and the game and scored 3 converted tries in 15 minutes. This was something that certainly impressed Reynolds “I thought the Titans backs were superb. Taunton like to play with such pace and make very few mistakes, this took our forwards out of the game and that was the difference in the two sides today.”
The first of the Titans tries was scored by Captain Nick Mason who cut a great line as the Taunton attack stretched the Rams defence from one side of the pitch to the other. This was followed by one for winger Aron Struminski. After a break to the line by prop Connor Baker on the right wing, the ball was sent to the left wing before coming back the opposite way for Ollie Rice to put Struminski in on the overlap. The Titans bonus point try was scored by full back Ollie Rice with Struminski returning the favour and putting Rice away after drawing the Redingensians full back.. All 3 of these were converted by scrum half Connor Banks. Which gave the home side a 31 – 14 lead. Redingensians kept playing and were rewarded with a try scored by winger Conor Corrigan, with Humberstone adding the conversion to make the final score 31 – 21.
Taunton head coach Tony Yapp said after the game “I thought we played very well today, and we had to. Redingensians are a team in good form. They’re well coached, well organised and are a tough team to beat. After our last couple of performances we needed to produce a good team performance and we managed to do that. With a few players within the squad for the first time this season we produced the energy required at this level. We kept hold of the ball well and managed to create some good tries which gave us a bit of breathing space towards the end of the game. Which is where we needed to be against a team like Redingensians.”
The County Stores Man of the Match was awarded to scrum Connor Banks.
