The Titans tame the Wild Geese
Taunton Titans gained some revenge from their defeat earlier in the season.
With the going underfoot heavy and soft after the recent weather it was Taunton that held on in the end after some ill-discipline nearly cost them the game with the Wild Geese nearly swooping in and taking the spoils.
The Titans started the game well with when a great break by Jack Claydon set up the opportunity for winger Aron Struminski after some quick hands by Toby East & Nick Mason that set him racing in for a try and the first points of the game. Full back Gary Kingdom kicked the conversion and didn’t miss a kick all game which in the end was the difference.
Taunton were in control in the first half and a try for flanker Jamie Fleming 10 minutes later increased the home sides lead after a great drive by the home pack. London Irish then collected a try when some poor Titans defence allowed winger Reon Joseph to score. The conversion was missed and the Titans scored two further tries before the end of the half. First was hooker Chris Francis who flopped over the line after some great phase play from the whole team with backs and forwards combining well. Next was prop Connor Baker who was driven over with a little help from a couple of backs adding all of their weight to the drive. With the bonus point secured and Kingdom’s boot making the half time score 28 – 5 everything looked comfortable for the Titans.
The home side then started to lose control and twice in the second half they were reduced to 13 men and the visitors capitalised. Scrum half Lewis Webb was sent for a 10 minute rest and the Wild Geese were awarded a penalty try. Six minutes later Taunton number 8 Sam Prior was shown a straight Red card for a ruck offence and London Irish capitalised once again and Harry Roffery emerged from a pile of bodies to claim the try.
Irish certainly had the upper hand but Kingdom kicked a penalty to ease the home crowds nerve. The Titans were reduced to 13 once again when Francis was shown a yellow and Irish given their 2nd penalty try to make it a 7 point game with 10 minutes to go.
Taunton managed to hold on for the last 10 minutes and at the final whistle were relieved that they went away with 5 points.
