New Ravens v Telford Raiders - 20 May 18
Raiders u13s start the season with a stutter.
Telford's u13s squad, with many players new to the sport and hungry for their first match, had to make the best of a disappointing opposition turnout at the NEW Ravens junior festival.
With the other 2 visiting teams pulling out late in the week, and the home side not having enough players at the right ages on the day itself, the Raiders u13s management team had to improvise with a touch rugby game against the Ravens u14s squad and a contact game between themselves with the addition of the 2 Ravens u13s.
The eager squad of 12 had travelled to Kings Norton hoping for their first full contact game of the year, and many players were disappointed not to get a proper hit out, but made the best of the situation with some fantastic flair on display in the touch game, and a serious approach to the contact game essentially against their own team-mates.
On a roasting hot day, Telford showed their attacking flair against much older opposition as they were encouraged to build sets like a contact game but take risks later in their sets. Many players showed encouraging footwork, lines of running and wide passing skills which coach Alex Smith found very useful for future team selection purposes.
In fact, after half-time, the Raiders out-scored the older NEW Ravens team by 3 tries as the home side made multiple errors and were surprised by the enterprising attacking style of their visitors.
In the contact game, many Raiders lads whose game is more suited to contact rugby, were given the chance to show their running and tackling prowess - and even though many were feeling the effects of the hot sun by then, the lads showed a mature approach and tried their hardest to get some benefit from the game.
With the next match at home on the 3rd June, the squad, management team and parents will all be looking forward to finally getting the chance to see some full contact competitive rugby league in 2018!!
