Raiders u14s run Flintshire close in high scoring thriller
With holiday season badly affecting availability for games, Telford Raiders played a high-scoring small-sided u14 game against Flintshire Falcons in the hot sun at the Queensway Stadium in Wrexham (home to the NW Crusaders League 1 side).
On a reduced-size pitch that nevertheless provided plenty of space for exciting rugby, the Raiders started strongly with Tom leading from dummy-half and Caleb taking early carries to get the team on the front foot. This gave James the opportunity to score twice, first by using Telford's extra numbers on the right, and second after breaking several tackles down the middle.
Flintshire responded with two tries of their own, however, but Ethan got on the scoreboard with a dummy & go after a good line break from Harry to make the score 16-10 at the first water break.
The second period saw plenty more tries as attack dominated defence from both teams. Falcons opened the scoring by working numbers well on the right, before Ethan got his 2nd as an overlap forced the defensive to over-slide and allowed him to power over.
A Flintshire player responded with a great line break to go in under the sticks, before Ethan scored a carbon copy - again using numbers on the right to show & go over himself.
With defences wilting in the sun, Flintshire scored two more either side of a trademark James line bust length of field try to make the score even at 32-each at the second water break.
Ethan and James both got their 4th tries of the afternoon either side of a Falcons effort, with Tom, Caleb & Harry continuing to set the platform with good offloading & support work, and Telford went into the final 5 minutes ahead 42-38. However, a fortuitous outcome with a spilled pass deemed to have come off the Falcons player's chest levelled up the score, and just before the final whistle Telford's defence ran out of steam and conceded to make the final score Flintshire 48 (9 tries 6 goals) Raiders 42 (8 tries 5 goals).
