TEVERSAL FC 1-0 ARNOLD TOWN
"10 out of 10 For The Arnold 10"
Full credit must be given to Arnold Town who played the whole game with ten players after Ben Hunt named in the starting line and Jack Upton, Ricky Robinson and Ben Cheatle named as substitutes on the team sheet failed to turn up for the game. Not deterred from the challenge ahead the visitors put in a superb disciplined performance lining up with two banks of four with Jerome O'Connor and Jawanza Grant sharing the role of being the lone striker or being out on the right of midfield four.
You can look at the game and criticise Teversal but that would take away from the heroic performance of the Arnold ten who defended superbly to frustrate the home side who had 95% of the possession with the game having a feel of defence versus attack training session to it.
The game started off at a slow pace which suited Arnold who actually created the first opening when O'Connor whipped a cross in from the right across the six yard box that beat everyone including the intended target of Grant who had to burst into the penalty area from a deep position do to his defensive duties.
It was the defensive qualities of Arnold that became the talking point, for how disciplined they were being and keeping the two defensive banks to protect Tonge in their goal. It took the host until the 19th minutes to create a clear cut chance when Jack Griffiths cross from deep to the far post found Dave Cockerill to produce a cushioned pass to Danny Fletcher who fired over bar from 10 yards.
The first half continued at the same the tempo, with Arnold continuing to pose a small threat going forward as Grant or O’Connor chasing every ball that was cleared by the two banks of four. The host looked comfortable in possession but needed to raise the tempo in the second half if they was going break down the resilient looking visitors.
Clearly as the visitors officials and supporters didn’t recognise the efforts of their side as they made negative comments against the home side and showed no respect to the efforts of their own players as they made their way for their half time refreshment.
The longer the game went on the frustrations of the home side started to build, but with the valiant efforts of the visitors being tested even more as the tempo raised their defensive lines was getting deeper and deeper. This allowed from numerous efforts from just outside the penalty area with Jason Gregory and Dave Cockerill having efforts going just wide of the target.
The opportunities were building up for Teversal but just through share numbers in the penalty the efforts were simply being blocked with Tonge having to do nothing but routine goalkeeper duties to tidy up a loose ball here and there. Add the host lacked a clinical finish as they overplayed to looking to create the perfect opening, which was highlighted when Matt Wilkinson guided an effort across goal past Tonge but inches wide of the far post.
Arnold rode their luck to the limit and was aided by the referee who failed to award a stone wall penalty when Matt Wilkinson broke into the penalty area only to be upended by the mistimed challenge of Douglas from behind in the 85th minute. But with the clock ticking down, Teversal’s patience, persistence and dominance finally received the goal it deserved. Kurt Bamford delivered a ball into Dave Cockerill who managed to find space between the two defensive banks of four to control the ball with aplomb to turn to place the ball into the corner of the net from 8 yards out to gain the three points their total dominance deserved.
Clearly for their efforts the Arnold camp was totally gutted for not getting a point out of a game that their efforts deserved something from, they certainly was held in high regard for their efforts on the day, but not picking up a point from this game is the least of their worries, away from the heroic efforts of the afternoon, serious questions must be asked in the club and by the League on how they have only turned up with ten at this level of football. If anything they should take the positives from this game and use it to be a springboard to have a change in their fortunes.
For Teversal they can be happy with the three points and know they did more than enough to win the game against an Arnold side who simply had a game plan to frustrate the host, so the patience and know how on changing their approach finally paid dividend to make it four straight league wins for the Tevie Boys.
With no game next Saturday for the Tevie Boys with the next outing being an away trip to Kimberley Miners Welfare on Tuesday 25th October 2017 for an East Midlands Counties League Premier Division fixture, kick off 7:45pm kick off.
