Thackley travelled to the East Coast seeking revenge for the five nil mauling earlier received in the season. As STEVE PALEY reports, it wasn’t to be.
They would need to be at their best because the home side were four places above them in the table in fifth position. Chris Davey was unavailable and his place was taken by Liam Robinson, Liam Moore made way for Deroy White to lead the attack alongside Brice Tiani. Jamil Joseph, Luke Rhodes and Ed Hall joined Moore on the bench.
Thackley started the match the better of the two teams and created their the first chance on ten minutes. James Firth heading wide from a corner on the right. Brice Tiani then did well, setting up a shooting opportunity for Deroy White, but his shot from the edge of the box was also wide of the post. Scarborough's first assault on goal came on fifteen minutes, a corner from the right was not cleared properly and the ball fell to Gary Hepples, his shot sailed over the crossbar. Thackley were edging things at this time and should have taken the lead on nineteen minutes, Callum White picked up a poor clearance, he skipped past a couple of defenders but Kevin Martin, in the home goal, came out to deflect his shot wide. It was certainly a let off for the home side. This seemed to awaken Scarborough and they started to take control of the game. On twenty two minutes a corner from the right was hurriedly cleared, then Curtis Bernard headed over from another cross from the right. A minute later and Bernard was again guilty of heading too high from a Paddy Miller cross. Defender, John Mallinson did well to rob Bernard just inside the box before a Keenan Ratcliffe run down the right was knocked for a corner. On the half hour, Thackley keeper, Mark Bower, was nearly caught out when he could only parry a long range Tony Hackworth pile driver. The away side were still showing they could attack and Martin got down well to save from Tiani. On thirty six minutes Scarborough took the lead, again it came from the right, Hackworth crossing for the unmarked Ryan Blott to glance his header past a static Bower. Five minutes before the interval Bill Law saw his well struck shot go just wide of the post. Scarborough took their one goal advantage in at the break, Thackley had more than held their own for the first twenty minutes or so but Scarborough had taken control for the remainder of the half and just about deserved to be in front.
Thackley made a double substitution at the start of the second half, Liam Moore and Jamil Joseph replacing Deroy White and Matty Hall, the two replacements were pushed up front, Tiani dropping back into midfield. Scarborough continued very much as they had finished the first forty five minutes, pushing forward and looking to increase their lead. Firstly, Bernard fired wide from inside the box, then the same player just failed to get on the end of a Blott cross which skimmed across the face of the goal. Firth did well to dispossess Bernard after the away defenders had given the ball away before Scarborough got their second goal on fifty six minutes. Miller floated in a free kick from the left, Law, with no defenders near him, rose high to head back across goal, the ball hit the inside of post before rolling into the net. Scarborough made their first substitution, Adam Lee replacing Bernard. The home side continued to dominate things and Thackley were struggling to mount any sort of attack. Blott shot straight at Bower, then fired over after Lee had provided the Scarborough striker with the chance. Chris Hewitt replaced Law before the lively Lee was wide with his shot across goal. Bower did well to thwart Lee, coming out to the edge of the box, after the Scarborough substitute was put in the clear. The home side made their final substitution, Dave Kemp replacing Daz Winters. With just over five minutes of the game remaining, Thackley created a number of chances and could have got something from the game. Firstly, Callum White spooned his shot over from the edge of the box, then Matt Morgan fired wide from a free kick after Joseph had been upended. Moore turned and shot from the edge of the box and the ball flew inches wide before the same player somehow missed from just a couple of yards out after Tiani had fed the ball into the penalty area and the home defenders had failed to clear. Finally, Liam Robinson crossed to Tiani but Martin managed to stop the ball with his legs before Paul Whiteley shot straight at him. For the away spectators the final ten minutes of the game had been the most exciting, Thackley had struggled for long periods in the game, it would have been unjust for them to have salvaged a point with this performance.
On Tuesday the Dennyboys take on Nostell Miners Welfare in the quarter final of the League Cup, another performance like Saturday will see them exiting that competition. I am sure that Vinnie will have everyone in the right frame of mind to up their game for that match.
