07 MAY 2012 - THACKLEY v. SHIREBROOK TOWN - NCEL LEAGUE CUP FINAL AT PARKGATE

For the second successive year Thackley look for cup final glory. After going close in the WRCC last year, is it the Dennyboys’ turn this year?

As you know, Webmaster likes to compare league records for Thackley matches. He would normally, for example, be saying that Thackley had finished 10th in the Premier Division on 62 points with a GD of +12. He would perhaps point out that with a little more luck they could have picked up another nine or ten points which would have put them amongst the league’s frontrunners. Shirebrook, he might have said, finished 13th in Division One on 51 points with no GD.

But on tis occasion Webmaster might say “Hey … what’s the point? This is a cup tie, and a cup final to boot! A one-off winner-takes-all contest. What is the relevance of league position in a league season that’s well and truly over for both teams?” And isn’t that the truth?

Neither side have had an easy route to the final although with five rounds to contest, arguably Town’s journey was slightly the tougher.

Shirebrook have had to play (and beat) Dinnington (3-0), Maltby (3-0), Long Eaton (3-1), Brighouse (0-2) and Winterton (on penalties, 2-2 AET). It will not go un-noted that four of their five victories came against Premier Division teams.

Thackley’s path to the final involved victories against Worksop Parramore (1-2), Retford (5-1), Nostell (4-1) and Barton Town (1-3).

Shirebrook joined the NCEL at the beginning of season 2002-03. In their very first season they reached the semi-final of the league cup, losing out at that stage to Sheffield by the only goal of the match.

Thackley have a longer history of league cup involvement going back to the league’s inception in 1982. They have previously reached the final on two occasions going down 2-1 to Spennymore in 1993, and 4-1 to Hucknall Town the following year. Both of those games were played at Ossett Town’s ground. Will Parkgate be luckier for the Dennyboys?

Thackley will probably go into Monday’s final as favourites. They will, however, take Shirebrook for granted at their peril. You only have to ask Premiership teams Malty, Long Eaton, Brighouse and Winterton whether Shirebrook will be at Parkgate because they rode their luck, or whether they are there totally on merit? One cup upset happens, but four?

But as we all know, if Thackley play to their full potential, then they can beat anyone in this league. Ask Retford! We also know that Vinnie and Pattie will not allow the lads to be complacent. The set-up is too professional to allow that to happen; the lads too hungry for success.

The trophy cabinet at the Dennyfield already has two new trophies this season. The Dennyboys have a great chance to make it three!

Come on Thackley!

See you there.
