Fifteen from Eighteen for The Dennyboys.
Two first half goals and another competent performance gives Thackley five victories from their last six matches.
Garforth Town 0 Thackley 2.
Thackley made the short trip to the other side of Leeds to play Garforth Town on Saturday. The Miners were a couple of places above the Dennyboys in the table, and although the home side had brought a point away from their mid week fixture at second place Worksop, Thackley were hoping to get something from this game. With four victories from their last five games the away side were playing the best they had all season and were full of confidence. Management duo, Chris Reape and Paul Clayton, kept faith with the same eleven that played so well in last week’s victory over Athersley.
On a very green pitch for this time of the year, Thackley had a great chance to take the lead on eight minutes. A poor clearance from home keeper Paul Hagreen, went straight to Thackley’s top scorer Mike Garrod, with Hagreen out of position and the goal at his mercy, his shot was blocked by defender Jassim Alali. Thackley were giving their opponents no time to settle on the ball, Paul Whiteley, Pat McGuire and Doug Stevenson dominating mid field, Ryan Farrell and Tom Dugdale were tracking back and the defence were coping with what little was thrown at them. However, for all their mid field possession, Thackley’s final pass was going astray. Garforth were limited to using the long ball and away keeper Ed Hall had to come out of his area to clear as Nick Black raced clear with twenty minutes gone. The Dennyboy’s hard work paid off on twenty eight minutes, when they went in front after winning a corner on the left. Damian Hopkins timed his run to perfection to head home Dugdale’s perfectly flighted cross. Thackley continued to control things in mid field and ten minutes later got their second. Again it came from the left, Stevenson, with his back to goal, turned and with the deftest of touches, looped the ball over Hagreen. Thackley should have increased their lead even further two minutes later, but Farrell had strayed off side after both he and Garrod had broken clear of the defence. However, it was not to be and the Dennyboys went into the break with a well deserved two goal advantage.
Half time: Garforth Town 0 Thackley 2.
It was the home side that started the second half the better and Mark Simpson should have shot instead of passing after getting clear in the opening minute. Thackley made their first change ten minutes into the half, Nick McNally coming on for Jerry White, Dugdale dropping back into the defence. Stevenson picked up a rather silly booking from an inexperienced referee, when perhaps a word would have sufficed, before Thackley again went close just after the hour. Elliott Holmes getting on the end of McNally’s cross, his header rebounded off of the bar with Hagreen beaten, Garrod got his head to the rebound but this time Hagreen pushed the ball over. Garforth were showing up much more in this half and Hall made his first save of the game on sixty five minutes, a long range pile driver from Tim Robertson. Five minutes later, Hall did well to pinch the ball from the feet of Simpson, before Andy Hawksworth was on hand to thwart the in the coming McNally and turn Garrod’s cross for a corner. The game was swinging from end to end, McGuire and Farrell both put the ball wide, before Tawanda Rupere’s well struck shot was just inches wide of the top corner. Thackley now needed to defend and both Hopkins and Kris Hargreaves were coming under increasing pressure to ensure that the away side kept a clean sheet. Hall got down well to save from Black before Joe Brown replaced the hard working Garrod. Mark Trueman came on for McNally soon afterwards as the game entered the final minutes. Thackley were working hard but were giving the ball away allowing Garforth to push forward. A Simpson shot cleared the bar after Rupere had put him through, he then headed wide. Another long range effort from Robertson whizzed past the post and Hagreen saved easily from Brown before time was called on proceedings.
Full time: Garforth Town 0 Thackley 2.
Thackley continue their good run of form, they are now third in the league’s Form Table, with five wins from six games. Again this was an excellent team performance, everyone working hard, particularly in the first half when Garforth were never allowed to trouble Hall.
On Tuesday night Thackley face a real test when they travel to league leaders Tadcaster Albion. The Brewers played 120 minutes of football on Saturday in their quest to progress in the FA Vase. With the replay against Highworth Town next weekend, they may have their thoughts on other things and it may be a good time to play them.
