Thackley Get Back to Winning Ways.
Adam Clapham reports on how Thackley completed the double (or should it be treble) over Garforth Town.
Thackley 3 Garforth Town 1.
Thackley were looking to get back to winning ways on Saturday after last week’s rather disappointing defeat against Maltby. Their opponents, Garforth Town were a couple of places below them in the league and Thackley had already beaten them earlier this year at Cedar Ridge. The Dennyboys were without striker Andy Wood, ill, and Jerry White was serving the first of his three match suspension. Ben Cohen was selected to lead the attack, whilst Baz Lttlefair came in at the back. Following a morning pitch inspection, the match was given the go ahead, but conditions would not be easy with the surface likely to cut up.
Thackley kicked off the game and controlled proceedings from the off. Ryan Farrell had the first effort of the game after 13 minutes. Running down the right wing, and after linking up with Ben Cohen, Farrell was played through and rifles a shot at the goal, only to be stopped by the keeper. After continued pressure, Thackley took the lead after 16 minutes through Pat McGuire’s first goal in over a year. Garforth keeper Tom Osbourne’s save rebounded out to captain McGuire who stroked it home. Garforth had an opportunity to level the score just 4 minutes later. Spencer Lund connected with Mark Simpson’s ball to fire at Dayle Coleing who tipped it wide. After a succession of corners, one of which hit the bar, the ball was cleared away from the Thackley area. Tom Dugdale was then sent through following a deflected header. The winger was able to force a corner from the keeper but nothing came of it. Thackley managed to extend their lead to 2-0 on the 32nd minute. Cohen burst through on goal beating the offside trap; and after rounding the goalkeeper managed to place the ball off the post into an empty net. Just 10 minutes later Garforth clawed one back. The ball was sent into the box and managed to evade Craig Bentham’s block before finding Spencer Lund to tap into the net.
Half Time: Thackley 2-1 Garforth Town
As the second half began, Thackley looked to maintain their lead in the early exchanges and managed to add a third goal around the hour mark. Ryan Farrell’s cross to the far post found an unmarked Tom Dugdale. ‘Duggy’ was able to strike the ball on the volley with his left to extend the lead to 3-1. Farrell had the chance to add his name to the score sheet too as the clock ran down. Garforth midfielder George Conway’s shot was saved by Coleing who released Farrell through on goal on the counter; his effort though wasn’t good enough to properly test the goalkeeper. Thackley ran out 3-1 winners in the end, next is a tough test against Pickering Town on Tuesday night.
Full time: Thackley 3-1 Garforth Town.
Considering the conditions, Thackley knocked the ball about well and fully deserved their win. At no time in the game did the Dennyboys look like losing this one, in fact with a bit better finishing, at least two one on one’s, the score could have been more flattering.
Thackley will be looking to build on this victory when they tackle an inform Pickering Town at Dennyfield on Tuesday night.
