Another blank for Thackley.
Failure to score and a soft goal result in fourth successive defeat for Dennyboys.
Rainworth Miners Welfare 1 Thackley 0.
Thackley travelled to Rainworth on Tuesday night for their penultimate league game of the season. With little to play for but pride, both teams in a mid table position, the match could turn out to be a typical end of season encounter. Thackley had won the reverse fixture by three goals so were hopeful of completing the double. However, there were a number of absentees which was unlikely to help their quest for three points.
It was the home side that started the better and Thackley were lucky to survive on five minutes when Declan Brewin got clear, the Dennyboy’s keeper Dayle Coleing getting his hand to his flick, the ball ran clear and the same player fired in a shot which hit the foot of the post. Dan Pett got on the end of a Ryan Farrell cross soon afterwards but his looping header hit the bar. Thackley looked the most likely after this and Ben Townsend, in the home goal, did well to push away Joe Brown’s fifteenth minute effort. However, a couple of minutes later, Thackley succumbed to a soft goal, Liam Hudson could only help Brewin’s half hit shot over the line. It was a scrappy game with neither side able to grab the initiative. Rainworth were happy to launch the ball forward to try to catch the Thackley defence out, whilst the Dennyboys tried to play football but all too often gave the ball away. Andy Wood picked up an early booking from a rather naive referee, who as the game progressed gave a number of quite strange decisions. Whilst possession was pretty even, Thackley were unable to test Townsend, Coleing the busier of the two keepers. The home side also rattled the woodwork on a couple of occasions and Thackley were lucky not to go into the break more than one down.
Half time: Rainworth Miners Welfare 1 Thackley 0.
Thackley produced their best chance of the match five minutes into the second period, Wood getting clear but Townsend turned his shot against the post. Coleing got down well to save from Liam Morris a couple of minutes later before Craig Bentham picked up Thackley’s second booking. It was turning into a typical end of season match with little in the way of any constructive football being played, the home players taking every opportunity to roll about when tackled and a rather bewildered referee not really knowing what to do. Dan Pett had Townsend at full stretch mid way through the second half but Thackley were creating little in the way of chances. Wood and Hudson were replaced by Jack Morrall and Jerry White as Thackley looked to create something. The Dennyboys tried to exert some pressure in the dying minutes from a number of set pieces but to no avail and for the third game in a row failed to score.
Full time: Rainworth Miners Welfare 1 Thackley 0.
Overall, it was a rather scrappy game, Rainworth creating the better scoring chances and Thackley conceding another soft goal. It is worrying that they have now gone three games without scoring. Whilst Thackley were always likely to give a goal away, in the past they have been able to get back into games.
League Cup action on Thursday night, when the Dennyboys take on Bridlington Town in the Quarter Final of the League Cup. The winners of this match will be at home to Cleethorpes Town in the Semi Final next Tuesday night.
