Penistone Church 4 Thackley 1 - Match Report.
Late goal flurry ends Thackley's hope of returning with a point.
Penistone Church 4 Thackley 1.
On Wednesday night Thackley travelled to Penistone Church for their second league game of the season. Both teams had played twice thus far, once in the league, the other game in the FA Cup. Penistone had lost the season’s opening league game at Handsworth but beaten Bootle in Saturday’s FA Cup tie. Thackley’s first game was at Eccleshill and they returned with a point, in the FA Cup they went out to Whitley Bay despite a spirited second half fight back. With both Jerry White and Jordan Hendrie missing Ryan Basi and Pat McGuire made their first start of the season.
It was the home side that pressed from the start, playing with quite a stiff breeze they should have been in front on ten minutes, Tom Brennan heading wide from a corner. Penistone were getting plenty of space on the flanks and crosses were flashing across the Thackley goal on a regular basis. Nathan Keightley got on the end of one of these but Kieran Thompson deflected his close range effort over. The game was over twenty minutes old before Thackley had their first attempt on goal, James Rothel firing wide. A couple of minutes later Thackley had Luke Wilson to thank for not going behind, saving at point blank range from Kieran Ryan. Somewhat against the run of play Thackley took the lead with a well worked goal, James Ngoe’s trickery down the right got him into the box; he laid the ball back for Jordan Hines to score for the third time in three games. Thackley were holding out and looked to be taking their one goal advantage into the break. It was not to be, a rather soft free kick given just inside the Thackley half was helped into the net via the head of Elliott Firth. It was a bad time to concede for the Dennyboys.
Half time: Penistone Church 1 Thackley 1.
The wind that had given the home side a certain amount of assistance in the first half seemed to have dropped at the start of the second. Wilson was the first keeper in action in this half, tipping a Sam Scriven’s shot over. Adam Muller came on to replace Pat McGuire to make his first competitive appearance. Thackley were now beginning to press the home side and keeper Jared Oxley did well to hold onto a Thompson header. Penistone looked dangerous going forward and Wilson was called on a couple of times to make saves. Thackley made a second change, Redmond Lee coming on for Hines. These changes seemed to boost the away side and they put the home defence under a certain amount of pressure. Muller tested Oxley before, a couple minutes later; laying the ball back to Rothel whose shot was deflected over. A Thompson free kick went narrowly wide and Nicky Matthews saw his curled effort just evade the far post. With ten minutes to go the Thackley contingent thought that they had gone in front again but Oxley somehow had got down to push away Muller’s tap in after he had latched onto Lee’s through ball. A minute later and it was the home side that were celebrating, a breakaway down the right, the ball was crossed and with his first touch of the game, Conor Glavin’s powerful shot gave Wilson no chance. Thackley continued to press and were caught again five minutes later, this time it was Scrivens that netted. Still pushing forward, Thackley got caught yet again, Scrivens was the provider this time his cross finding Andy Ring at the far post, he netted from close range.
Full time: Penistone Church 4 Thackley 1.
Overall, I do not think you can argue with the result, but the score line flattered the home side. Thackley rode their luck somewhat in the first half against the wind to go in level at the break. They went so close to going in front with ten minutes remaining but fell a goal behind from a breakaway a minute later. Pushing forward they left themselves exposed at the back and paid the penalty, Penistone adding two further late goals.
Thackley will be looking for their first victory of the season on Saturday when they entertain Barton Town in their first home league game.
