U12 Stripes vs Cold Ash Lightning
Competitive and great game to watch - well done both teams !
Home game at Lower Way against Cold Ash Lightning today, and I will immediately state this was the best performance of the season from the Tornadoes U12 Stripes team. Top job ! Unfortunately Bo was ill and could not make it (absolutely right not to play if unwell - hope you feel better soon), so we had a squad of 8. Big thanks to Stuart the Cold Ash manager who immediately said “We’ll play 8v8” even though he had 12 players there so had to manage his subs more actively.
Both teams started brightly, Stripes pressing well and then standing strong was very encouraging to see. Our back line started with Sam W, Riley and Callum H, but we soon switched this to give Riley more freedom to push forward, and Henry dropped back to cover. I was optimistic especially when I saw the commitment from Alfie, the energy from Callum F, and the twists and turns from Nathan - we were pushing them, no question. We then had what can only be described as a mad 5 minutes at the end of the first half - after all the hard work from Stripes, Cold Ash managed to break clear three times to score three goals. Really felt for the team. Callum A was in goal but he had been outstanding all the half, and had no chance against these three breaks.
Team talk at half time, along with Haribou, and the kids were up for it again. Callum F took a rest by taking on goalkeeper duties - he is an excellent shot blocker. . .with his feet, his knees, his shoulders, his elbows, in fact any part of his body apart from his hands ? On pitch the team were giving everything, Alfie, Nathan and Riley were spent of energy but kept going on regardless. The ball then dropped to Henry just about on the half way line, and BOOM - he absolutely hammered it, so high Stuart and I were convinced it was in the play park if not the road ! But no. . . ever so sweetly it dropped right into the back of the Cold Ash net. Awesome goal - way better than Rooney’s for sure ! Stripes were camped in the Cold Ash half throughout then, but again a break and luck of the bounce saw Cold Ash take good advantage to score again. Callum H then pulled on the gloves to see out the half in goal, and more great pressure and more great defending brought a very competitive and great game to a close.
All I can say is that was a great team performance, and a great game to watch. Very proud of you all.
Player of the week: Henry. Not just the goal, but he was strong in his tackling and blocking and never stopped. Even before I announced it, the rest of the team all said “Henry”.
Thanks to all parents for your support, especially Rory and Matt for sharing linesman duties. Also thanks to Karen for manning the tea & coffee stand, and to everyone who helped setup and pack away goals.
That is our last match this year but training continues for 2 more weeks (last one on 13th Dec). Futsal in Jan - more details to follow.
