Thatcham Tornadoes Under 12 girls vs Maidenhead girls
A chill in the air but the U12 girls are on fire!
Just one sub today meant that the girls got plenty of chance to run around and stay warm. We kicked off with our backs to the sun, Daisy in goal, supported by Charlotte, Ruby and Bo in defence. Abi played centre with Evie and Beau on the wings and Chloe and Sophie as strikers. Charlotte was this weeks captain and started the match with the same determination and skill as she showed last week!
Abi made a great start in a less familiar position, remembering to fall back to support the defenders, tracking the ball all over the pitch. We had some good possession early on and whilst Beau consistently bought the ball up the left Sophie and Chloe made some great passes to keep the ball in our attacking half. It was thanks to her focus and insight that Beau scored the first goal for Tornadoes, intercepting a goal kick to shoot straight and hard into the goal, great work Beau!
We won two corners in quick succession due to our persistence in the box. When the Maidenhead girls attempted to break through Ruby intercepted and with great timing and precision won the ball back. The Maidenhead girls made another break for our goal using quick accurate passing to see off our defenders. It was Abi who rescued the situation sending the ball wide to Beau who made another trademark sprint down the left with the ball.
Despite us struggling to mark sufficiently in order to win back possession, when we had the ball, each player did great things with it! After a short break Chlo came onto the right wing and made some skilful attacks and a great switch to the middle of the pitch that was picked up by Holly. Holly took the opportunity to bring the ball forward through a couple of defenders showing an excellent increase in confidence!
Daisy had little action thanks to the great teamwork this half and found herself chasing patches of sun to warm her hands in! When she did get hold of the ball she kicked it out of her hands to a waiting Sophie who worked hard to position herself and shoot. The shot rebounded off the keeper and after a scuffle Abi stepped in to finish what Sophie started, scoring our second goal.
Before the end of the half we worked really hard in the box Chloe putting great pressure on the defenders to win a throw in and taking a great throw. When under pressure in the middle Abi made a great pass back to Charlotte as we have been practicing in training, to keep possession and keep the opposition on their toes. Both Sophie and Chloe had a great shot each at the goal, both of which were saved.
At half time the girls acknowledged that their switching was good, but their marking wasn't so strong. They came back on determined to allow less passing opportunities for the opposition. Sophie came on for Daisy in the goal and Daisy took centre whilst Abi moved to the left wing. Sophie was active from the start and with the sun in her eyes managed to read the game well on several occasions coming out deep to intercept the ball and see of the opposition.
Chloe was playing striker this half and came back to retrieve the ball repeatedly, making use of Bo who called for the back pass and dealt with it really well. Daisy took the first shot of the half that was pushed out by the keeper, Holly was well placed to follow up and took a powerful shot that just went wide! It wasn't long before a lovely ball from Ruby through the middle allowed Daisy to outskill the defenders and take a second to perfectly place the ball in the bottom left corner.
Evie was keen to have a turn in defence and didn't let herself down, she put great pressure on approaching attackers forcing the ball out of play or clearing it when needed. Holly also worked hard this half, putting pressure onto the defenders in the box making it hard for them to clear the ball and helping to win back possession. The fourth goal came from Daisy after some skills in the box, followed by some excellent passing with Abi to set Abi up for a shot that went wide.
Sophie did a great job of calling some really positive encouragement to the team. She was challenged to come out and make a brave challenge to protect her goal and with the support of Bo Maidenhead were held off yet again. Soph then made another impressive save.
Beau continued to battle hard showing fantastic stamina until the end. She made an excellent cross to Abi who finished well for a fifth tornadoes goal. Ruby was challenged to play on the wing for the last part of the game and tackled it with her usual calm confidence. Ruby adapted well to the position and when Holly passed out to her she had the opportunity to shoot, which she took, not quite overpowering the keeper.
This game presented a good opportunity for the girls to work on honing their skills, practicing their techniques from training and developing confidence in unfamiliar positions. It has to be noted that we now have a really strong confident team of defenders who truly understand the role. Well done to all the girls for their excellent effort and attitudes today. Thanks a lot to the efficient team of goal erecters and thanks to Kev and Simon for their Lino-ing!
