Thatcham Tornadoes Under 12 girls vs Maidenhead girls
Away to Maidenhead girls after hosting them last week
This week we ventured away for the first time in a while. After hosting them last week and winning 5-0 we took on a determined Maidenhead team on their home ground. It was clear from the beginning that Maidenhead had learned from their experience last week, as they played four defenders from the start.
We started with Rhianna joining Holly up front supported by Poppy in the centre and Abi and Beau on the wings. We maintained last weeks successful defence combo of Charlotte, Ruby and Bo. Evie and Chloe were subs first and Poppy was captain after winning the trainee of the week award last night.
Despite being the stronger team, we started a bit shakily and a lack of communication at the back allowed Maidenhead to break through and score a goal within the first few minutes. This kicked the Tornadoes into action and pretty soon Abi took on two defenders in the box to score our first goal at close range.
Holly did a great job of intercepting the Maidenhead kick-off and played some great tactical football with Rhianna to bring the ball forward into shooting range. After a tough battle with the defenders, Beau took a long shot that was powerful enough to slip through the keepers hands, well done Beau, this is becoming your trademark shot!
Beau continued to battle hard, supported by Charlotte and all defenders were tested continually by Maidenhead's quick passing. Daisy sent a good kick from her hands to Abi who made some excellent passes with Poppy through the middle. Holly then had the chance to bring the ball through and fought hard against two defenders, but could not see a gap to shoot!
The play was fast and switched ends frequently. Daisy made a great diving save just before the whistle, which thankfully, came earlier than expected!!
After half time Abi played in goal and Daisy took the left wing. Beau asked to play on the right and Rhianna returned to rightback. Chloe and Holly had a good half time talk about shooting tactics and were psyched up to take any shots they could. Our marking was still lacking in places in the second half and communication could have been better. The pitch was also very slippery making it difficult for the girls to change direction and speed.
Maidenhead were caught offside a couple of times this half in their desperation to even the score. Holly and Chloe both worked really hard to retrieve and play the ball in the goal area as well as supporting Poppy and the wingers. Pretty soon Daisy and Poppy got to work playing some quick one two's to split the defence. Daisy's first shot went high and pretty soon after Poppy took an accurate shot that was saved by the keeper.
Next to take a shot was Beau following a good corner from Poppy. The shot was wide leading to a goal kick. Ruby had been playing quietly and consistently until this point. She read a high ball really well and volleyed off her knee out wide to Beau, great football Ruby! Chloe took her chances with a long shot, although she didn't have the power for it to reach the goal that time.
Ruby continued to shine at the back and made a well timed and planned switch to Daisy, who passed forward and wide to Beau who made a lovely cross into the goal area, the keeper caught then dropped the ball and after a scuffle with Holly battling hard to find a way through the heavy defence the ball came out to Daisy who gently controlled the ball around the keeper and passed safely into the goal for our third.
Our final goal was scored by Evie who attacked the ball in the air as it was crossed in front of the goal, great first goal for the team Evie!
Maidenhead had a strong final push, giving Abi and the defenders a challenge in the last few minutes, Abi read the ball well on several occasions catching and diving confidently. Bo was really strong at the back as her side of the pitch was attacked, continuing to hold off the attack and keep Abi safe.
I had special mentions for everybody today, as despite some miscommunication and some marking issues, the girls worked hard and each excelled themselves at some point. I mentioned how well Charlotte and Beau play together and similarly how Poppy and Daisy read each other well. I was proud of Rhianna for showing no fear and having a go up front and Holly and Chloe for showing more confidence and faith in themselves. Abi was nervous about being in goal, but was brilliant, as well as being great on pitch today. Evie scored her first goal with great style!
Player of the match was Ruby for her cool defensive style, her consistency and excellent placed and timed passes. Ruby has also lead the warm up for the last two weeks, which she has done brilliantly thanks Rubes!
