Thatcham Tornadoes Under 12 girls at home to AFC Reading
Rain, injury and illness did not stop play today!
This will be a brief report. The cold and rain made it difficult to write, so I didn't!!
We had eight super keen girls today, who were really excited to accept the challenge of playing 8vs9 in a slightly different format to what they are used to. They knew that, to conserve energy they would need to make use of their passing. Daisy was first in goal, with Charlotte, Ruby and Bo in defence. Poppy and Beau held midfield positions and Sophie and Holly worked together at the front.
From the start we showed AFC that we could keep possession and put constant pressure on their defence. Our defenders all showed the confidence to bring themselves into the action, remembering to cover for their teammates when they were pressing the ball, or making a run.
We had so many shots on goal in the first half, many of which went wide or high. The girls shouldn't be cross with themselves for having the guts to take a shot, the wind was a factor and at times, just a tiny bit of patience may have paid off. Beau worked incredibly hard creating chances and taking several shots, great persistence Beau!
Due to only playing with 8 girls the strikers were expected to fall back when needed and fall out wide to broaden our playing area. Both Holly and Sophie stepped up to this well, Sophie in particular ran hard and fast repeatedly, working non stop for the whole first half.
We finished the first half with a 2-0 scoreline, the girls were buzzing, proud of themselves, as they knew they had worked hard. Sophie swapped into goal for Daisy and we went into the second half with as much energy as before. AFC struggled to move into our half of the pitch and were frustrated when we continued to thwart their attempts. The defenders continued to participate in our attacking game when there was little defending to do and despite one small mistake that allowed a rogue goal to be scored, they were on fire!
There was some beautiful football all round today. Simple calling, passing and moving that made it hard for the opposition to get a look in despite having an extra player. Daisy and Poppy worked the balls fed in by Beau to produce five more goals and Holly had two chances at the goal which were saved.
The highlights of the game for me were Sophie saving a goal by catching the ball between her legs and Poppy nearly taking out a car wing mirror! The player of the match was decided within the first ten minutes. Sophie stepped up to her slightly altered role today with passion, she had to run further and faster than she would normally need to and she managed this easily. I loved watching her outskill players and make some really intelligent passes.
Thanks to everybody for setting up in my absence, thanks to the lino's and see you next week!
