Leeds Grammar School was the venue on a cloudy afternoon.

Our U10 boys ventured to Leeds for the first round of the Yorkshire Youth Hockey League. With some new faces since last season this was a young team excited at the chance to play some match hockey.
We were in League B so immediately faced some skillful and speedy attacking but soon proved to be rock solid in defence with Sam and Alistair making some great tackles, interceptions and providing some really useful clearances straight through to the forwards. Our goalkeeper, Oliver McI, had a fantastic day, called upon in every game and making some excellent saves.
In midfield Oliver McN, George and Oliver Q. worked really hard, with endless determination, trying to stop the opposition coming through and passing up to the forwards. Up front we had Tom and Jude who never tired, running hard and not frightened to take on players to get into the D. Throughout the afternoon Thirsk’s attacking play grew and grew.
After 4 matches we had kept 4 clean sheets but still hadn’t quite managed to squeeze in a goal, despite Jude being very close. However, once the final match started you got the feeling a goal would come. The improvement in passing had gone up a gear and team confidence was high. The coaches and parents were giving great, positive support to the team who were working so hard. The defence were still kept busy, with their clearances being passed up the field with accuracy and promise. Then finally, towards the end of the game, Jude’s great ball control and determination paid off, scoring a goal that the team thoroughly deserved. The game ended 1-0.
A really successful afternoon of hockey showing how a team can grow and develop in such a short time. Much to look forward to in the next round! Well done boys!
A big thank you to Mike and Ewan for coaching and to all the parents for bringing along their children and giving the team great support.
