Slim Chance to No Chance

Any hopes of promotion dashed away at Boston Spa.

Saturday 22nd March, Thirsk went in to this game still with a slim chance of gaining the second place position in the league and entering the playoff against Div 4 South 2nd place for promotion. But first they had to defeat Boston Spa and hope results went their way elsewhere in the league.
The game started nicely with Thirsk gaining ground and attacking Boston Spa’s goal, but they were unable to force any clear cut chances. Unfortunately it was Boston who scored first with a scrambled short corner somehow managing to evade the defenders and squirm over the line.
Thirsk tried to get back in the game, but were off the pace and the physicality of Boston’s defence leaving several Thirsk players battered and bruised, including one who appeared to have gone several rounds in a boxing ring let alone a game of hockey. And with the umpires not stamping out this aggression Boston ramped it up and in some cases didn’t even attempt to play the ball as they physically disrupted Thirsk hockey and quite literally knocked the wind out of Thirsk.
Boston scored 1 more before half time and another after the break with their physicality finally being penalised with one of their players receiving a yellow card, unfortunately it was with 2 minutes remaining and far too late to affect the game.
Boston won the game 3-0 and any hopes Thirsk had of finishing 2nd in the league were doubly dashed as Acomb beat Tadcaster in the top of the table clash leaving both teams on more points than Thirsk can get with one game remaining. Thirsk will however finish higher than last season, having won more games than last season, kept more clean sheets than last season, conceded fewer goals than last season and scored more points than last season with one game still to play on the 11th April.
There was no MoM awarded this week, however there was a joint DoD award. Both Phil Hughes and Harry C are awarded it for believing they were doing sneaky car dirt graffiti on their team mates cars, no realising that they were being watched from the Boston Spa clubhouse.
