The U12 A Team have had a great start to the season considering it is a new team with lots of new faces.

Standing Left to Right: Naomi Cooke, Daisy Auckland (C), Holly Pears, Minnie Pollock, Holly Riddell, Poppy Lawson, Alex Waiter-Westgarth
Lying: Evie Haigh (GK)
They finished second in Week 1 of the Yorkshire Youth Hockey League (YYHL), then going one better in Week 2 becoming winners of the YYHL, so excellent work all round.
Sunday afternoon saw the girls entering the North Yorkshire round of the Clubs In2Hockey Cup Competition at Thirsk Hockey Club. Competing against 2 other Thirsk teams (B & C), York A & B, Northallerton A and supposedly Harrogate A & B but sadly they never turned up! It did not dampen the competition, we extended the games to 20 minutes in length so all teams had a lot of hockey to play.
The first two pool matches and we had to face Thirsk C and York B. Thirsk A’s were ruthless in these games and it is fantastic to see how the girls are improving game on game. Both games were won 8 – 0, with goals flying in from Minne, Holly H, Holly R, Naomi and Poppy. The defence of Daisy, Alexa, Yas and Evie was rarely tested but anything that came their way was soon dealt with and they provide a great attacking option from the back. Next up was Thirsk B who were runners up in the other Pool, we knew we had to work hard against these girls, we are very fortunate to have a large amount of talented girls at Thirsk to pick from. Again the A girls were on fire, they started strong and were starting to move the ball around the pitch like seasoned professionals with some truly stunning goals, for me it was a joy to watch and I think the parents enjoyed it as well. We finished up 6-0 winners in the end.
So onto the final with York A, we knew this would be a tough game and they are an excellent team. I told the girls to work hard, keep passing well and pile on the pressure right from the off. They didn’t disappoint, we were two goals up within a matter of minutes and we were looking dominant. Half time came and the York girls were clearly given a good team talk because they came out fighting and managed to get a goal back in the process. However the Thirsk girls had more to give and they piled on the pressure more which resulted in two more goals coming our way. The game ended with a 4 – 1 win to the Thirsk A Team and they were crowned North Yorkshire Cup winners, an awesome result.
If they keep playing like they are they will be a force to be reckoned with this season.
