The much-anticipated Combination Cup semi-final gets underway this evening at the neutral venue of Aretians RFC in Little Stoke.
The winner plays Cleve in the Cup Final at The Memorial Stadium on Thursday May 7th.
Please come along this evening and give Thorns all your support for what will be the toughest game of the season. Let’s help the boys make sure it’s not the last game of the season.
Do you remember the last time Thornbury were at this stage of the competition? On Wednesday April 4th 2012 a weakened Thornbury side travelled to Cribbs Causeway to take on Clifton and came away with an 8-3 win. Rich Bennett scored the only try and Liam Rinn kicked a penalty in the famous win described at the time as “the biggest upset in the history of the Combination Cup”.
The Mighty Thorns team that evening was:
Dan Hussey; Rich Bennett, Rob Higgitt, Dai Matthews, Adam Barker; Liam Rinn, Jak Evans; Chris Till, Luke Workman, Adam Hodgkins, Giles Bristol, Paul Lambert, Tom Guzman, Liam Pemberton, George Maggs (c).
Replacements: Joe Jackson for Higgitt, George Jackson for Guzman, Mike Sander (not used), Matt Gay (not used)
Sadly, a nervous start in the final against Avonmouth gave Thorns too much to do and despite dominating the later stages they narrowly lost. Nevertheless, the win over Clifton will remain in the memory of all that were there for many years to come.
