It’s with great regret and sadness that Thornbury RFC announce the death of former Chairman Mike John.

Mike served on the Thornbury Committee from 1973 to 1982, the last five seasons as Chairman, standing down after the successful completion of the clubhouse building project and its opening in October 1981. In the days before leagues were introduced the highlight of competitive rugby during his time at the helm was in 1980/81 when Thornbury got to the semi-final of the Combination Cup.

Mike was also a very popular and long-standing referee in the Bristol Referee’s Society. He was 81 and had been ill for some time.

All at Thornbury RFC pass on their condolences to Mike’s family.

Mike’s funeral will be on Friday 6th February at 3:15pm at Christ the King Church, Castle Street, Thornbury. Deacon Lawrence will officiate. There will be a private family-only committal at Westerleigh Crematorium in accordance with Mike’s wishes followed by a celebration of Mike’s life at the Alveston House Hotel.

The family have requested no black to be worn and Mike’s wishes were to wear red, as befits a loyal Welshman.

There will be a minute’s silence for Mike before Saturday’s home match with Cullompton.
