Thornes Juniors U16's suffer defeat against Wakefield Owls

Thornes came into the match full of confidence following their win last week and started the game brightly. Positive play in the first few minutes helped Thornes create several good openings which they could not convert. They were made to pay for this on ten minutes when following a flurry of great saves from Ellis Pickard, Thornes could not clear the ball and Wakefield Owls opened the scoring. Unfortunately for Thornes this was swiftly followed by a second goal for Wakefield Owls following further hesitation in defence. Despite digging in and creating further opportunities, Thornes went into the half time break trailing 2-0.

Once again Thornes started the second half in a positive fashion and quickly got themselves back in the game. Following a period of pressure inside the Wakefield Owls box, Brook Slater set up Jed Firth to rifle home through a crowd of players from the edge of the box. Thornes continued to push for the equaliser putting the Owls under increasing pressure from a string of corners. It was Wakefield Owls however who scored next to make it 3-1 midway through the second half. Thornes continued to look to get back into the game but struggled to create clear openings. They were caught out again after 70 minutes when quick feet in the box by Wakefield Owls led to a penalty kick. Despite Ellis Pickard getting a hand to the spot kick, Wakefield Owls scored their fourth. Thornes continued to push right to the end and managed to score again with five minutes left on the clock. The ball was cleared out of the Owls box to Josh Cameron Edwards who met it on the volley to smash it in the top corner. Unfortunately for Thornes this stunning strike only proved a consolation as time ran out and the game finished 4-2 to Wakefield Owls. Man of the match for Thornes was Spencer Turner for his determination and work rate throughout.
